4th annual Fool’s trip

winter camping

SKOOKUMCHUCK HOT SPRINGS FEB 2003

The fourth annual fool’s trip was another redneck'n success.  Unlike the last two years this year we did make it to the tubs.  This trip report won't be that long as for some reason it’s a bit fuzzy.

What is the Fools Trip?

The Fools trip is a winter camping trip in heated cabin wall tents that starts with a 4 hour night run up to the Skookumchuck hot springs on often snow-covered logging roads. Then a weekend to utter stupidity.

This years pack of Fool’s we had 10 trucks and 20 people

We didn’t leave the Chevron in Mission until  8:00pm and hit the start of the logging road at 9:00pm. The drive up is one of my favourite parts of the trip.  It’s a fun road to drive if you have 4 aircraft landing lights on the front, tunes thumping  and Bruce and I talking; no singing into the CB along the way!!!! For some unknown reason, the rest of the group stopped talking to us. Bastards! What, they don’t understand or appreciate is the quality of singing that is me??!! Turns out my CB antenna fell out. I still say it must have been Bruce's singing that did it!!!!!!!!!!!

We arrived at the Skookumchuck hot springs around 1:30am and everyone got busy unpacking and setting up the three cabin wall tents, when a strange fog rolled in!  I'm sure of it because I had a heck of a time putting the poles in the right places. After a lot of stumbling around with the tents, Bruce and Trevor got busy warming up the extra-large cast iron fry pans. Some went to bed, some went in the tub and some of us stayed up till the crest of dawn.

Morning came way too early and I woke up to Bruce still cooking, but this time breakfast for everybody. Wondering if he went to bed? I stumbled out of bed and put some coffee on.  The rest of the morning was a daze. Rodney,Tyler, Billy, Rich and I went to collect some firewood and shoot the guns off.  What a bunch of fun; you have to picture it. We took turns between target shooting with the Ruger .22 and throwing skeets in the air and attempting to hit a moving target with the shot gun. We were commenting on how rednecky we were when a perfect song came on by Alan Jackson - It's all right To Be A Redneck… very fitting

Saturday night was a bit of a blur.  Here is what I remember "______________OK that’s about it!

It consisted of Hot tubs, a little bit of alcohol, and non-stop food being cooked up by Bruce and Trevor.

Billy had a run-in with the Russian spies  ( inside joke) and somehow cut his fingers with his knife.

Sunday morning we had another feast for breakfast then took down camp.  The Bone Shaker group left first but had to turn around 10 k up the road due to road work.  The alternate route to the bridge over the Lilloet river was a bit of a backtrack but I've never been that way and was a good change of scenery.

Timing was everything for Trevor as he busted his rear spring perch on his Jeep TJ, 19 k before the logging camp. The caretaker of the camp let Bob use the shop truck welder to patch it back together and get back on the road again.

The rest of the drive back was relatively uneventful and we arrived back on the street around 5:30 pm. We parted ways at the Indian gas station with everyone saying they had a great time and looking forward to the next trip.

Another successful Fool’s run
