Thanks for all of the replies (helpful and not so helpful) none of these explains why the truck goes from driving perfect to the way it is now though. Just waiting for BCAA to show up to get it towed to the dealership and Walt my Wife told me to give you one of these

Jayne was driving. Just got back from Pioneer and it is the axle shaft u-joints driver side is worn and passenger side is binding. Jeremy I will call them and ask them to check the Unit Bearing but hey did say that they will check the whole of the front end and now to the best part everything is covered under warranty Sometimes it pays to keep up the serice history.

if they are binding, its proably being caused by a bad unit bearing.

they hold all of the front wheel, axles.. ect together.

Very common for you front wheel joints to become worn and with a constantly turning axle shaft the u joint binds and causes vibration and worst case death wobble even with a manual locking hub this can cause shimmies when the hubs are unlocked due to inertia forces from driving.
A good way to check you wheel joints is to jack the front end up (jack stands) and turn the steering wheel all the way to one side, then by hand rotate the tire as it would if the truck were rolling... if the steering tries to straighten out then the joint needs to be replaced. If the steering stays at full lock, yer good.

Ps u must raise both tires from the ground

Can't see the worn ujoint causing it, but the "binding" ie: rusted solid joint, definitely would.

And good it's under warranty. I just did axle u-joints on an '08 3500. I'd been warned how tight the wheel bearings are to come out of the knuckle and they're right. However I did manage to get them loose fairly easily by doing the socket between the knuckle and bearing retainer bolt trick combined with my air chisel hammering away at the bearing housing near the knuckle/bearing bolt, worked like a charm after about 30 seconds of hammering. Would like to see someone do these without help, would of taken me a while to get them loose.
