Does it run well after you roll start it?

I'd suspect it has something to do with your relays for fuel pump perhaps when in the 'start' position on your key..

Standard of Auto? Have you checked the switches that cut off ignition if its not in Park\Neutral or have the clutch depressed?

Is the engine turning over and just wont fire?

now that I think about it, it's not a relay that controls that I don't think.. it's in the ECU.. Me and Trevor just did a 1.6 swap into his samurai, wired all that shit up.... The fuel pump will 'click' when you turn the key from the ACC position to the ON position, it will ONLY run if it receives crank signal (IE, motor running or turning). When in the START position the fuel pump starts running as the motor starts cranking.. So there's a crank signal wire that obviously works because your truck runs when roll started, and a pump wire for start.. so i'd trace the wire for 'start' back to the ECU and checker out..

If you need a wiring diagram give me a shout we got a few around that were invaluble.

ive ran my wiring diagrams through i got two las things to check

and yes the crank signal is working without the crank signal in the 1.6l theres no spark so yes that working only thing left is ground or relay or bad wires somewhere

My 1990 Samurai had the relay problem. When you turn the key there should be voltage exiting the relay to the pump for about 3-5 seconds. You should be able to hear your pump turn on, if not pop the cap off the relay (located under dash passenger side) see if it is rusted/ corroded/ burnt up. Yuo can also test the voltage exiting the relay with a cheap volt tester, the kind that looks like a screw driver with the light inside. There should be two relays under there, one is for the running lights and the other is the fuel pump. Typically you can hear them click when they pull in.

Good luck

Yeah..ground is probably the culprit now that I think about it - grounds rust up and become intermittent all the time.

I had the same problem with mine could not find the problem so I ran new wires to the pump put in a relay and it hasn't been a problem since.
