Cheap Motor Home or Pickup + Camper ?

Kelly and I are getting ready for another cross country trip back to BC...

Over the last couple of years we made two out and back trips... both times in small 4x4's and were a race usually doing the trip in 4 or 5 days.

This time it's a bit different, I'm planning on taking an extended break and spending at least a month to do the trip. We have been tossing around the idea of getting a used Dodge Ram 2500 or 3500 4x4 with the cummins in it and getting a slide in camper for it... By the way... all the good used Rams and campers are on the West Coast !

I've seen a few cheap class C motor homes lately... really cheap... under 5K,
and we almost bought one yesterday until Kelly reminded me that a 4x4 would have better ground clearance for getting into those rugged camping spots. We are planning on towing a lifted Samurai behind us, because there are places we ARE going to explore this time around...

We've never had anything bigger than a Grand Vitara for a personal vehicle.
But my service truck when I was working out west was an '06 Ram 3500 4x4 with a big ass canopy on the back... it was great on logging roads, and got pretty good mileage if I drove like a little old lady...

Any thoughts or suggestions on what to look for ?

Thanks !
Gerry

It would be nice to have time to convert a "short" bus...

however, common sense says it should be pretty much ready to roll... kelly saw pix of the cheap early 80's motor home and liked creature comforts... even if they came with fake wood panneling and shag carpet

I just don't want to dump the contents of a holding tank by snagging a tree stump.

As for driving a "short bus"... we took the service truck down to the Big Bar ferry crossing... that was fun !

Unless you get a diesel pusher (motorhome), you'll wish you bought a Cummins and a camper. Never did figure out why they even built a motorhome with a gas engine.

Thanks Kootenaycat... that pretty much confirms my feelings.

Diesel pushers are too much money - and too much motorhome,
and... I'm not ready to wear plaid polyester pants, or let my wife dye her hair blue...
(well, little old lady blue anyway !)

Long box Ram 2500/3500 Quad cab 4x4, is pretty much the shopping list now... just have to wait for the right deal to come along...

Thank-you everyone for kind offers of help with getting something in BC... of course, the problem is We're in deepest darkest Ontario at the moment... I've driven long distances in the Sam... and still have the numb bum to show for it. We're looking for something comfy for the drive to BC...
