Problem with my ignition coil

I am having trouble with my 2005 ford escape ignition coil The car is running rough. After taking it to auto zone and hooking it up to the I tried to start the car with the coil out with a plug in, but it wouldn't spark. I also tried to purchase a new coil and still no positive results. This time I tried pulling the one next to it and switched the coil and bingo. got it working. I am really uncertain if it is the cool or any other part, perhaps the plug. Can anyone clear this out for me?
