new chevy > 98 dodge for tow rig?

gramps is lookin to upgrade his cummins..

they haul a 24' trailer cross country, have been using a 98 dodge 2wd for about 9 years now.

hes lookin to up to a 2007 crewcab shortbox duramax 4x4 with the allison.

the dodges tranny crapped out three times after he put in a chip and 4" exhaust.... any bad reviews on the new chevy diesels or trannys?

comfy to ride and put any power to em, and the tranny will go just as fast.

there is not really any stock tranny that will take the extra power of upgrades and stress of the heavy trailer.

before he even thinks of putting any power adders he should have the tranny beefed up, stronger clutch packs, such and such or he he will just blow the allison as well,

Common mistake made by everybody they add power without first beefing up the auto tranny. Admittedly the Dodge tranny aint that good but beefed up it will be just as good if not better than any other tranny on the market. If you are going to be chipping any diesel give BD Diesel Performance or Jazzy Diesel a call to discuss tranny options first. If it was my money I would be sticking with the Cummins just for the engines reliabilty factor you look after it and it will look after you

The Dodge trans can be built up stronger than the Alli or the Ford trannys. In stock form all of the light truck diesel autos suck.

Personal preferance I would stay away from any of the newer diesels with the variable geometry turbos, to many issues with the new technology.

IMO I would keep the Dodge and spend the money on beefing the trans, the Cummins diesel is way more reliable and proven industrial engine. The other 2 were never used and weren't tough enough to be used in industrial service. You can find tons of gensets running the 6BT engine (5.9 Cummins Turbo) with thousands of hours on them.

My Durmax is stock power but i got 500000 km on it and no problems with the tranny. And i use it to tow probly 75% of that for work .But yes i agree the chips are nothing but trouble

We have a few duris at work. One is chipped and tows all the time. One is our service truck and it weighs 11000lbs and we have no issues with any of them. As for trannys don't go with the BD shit...buddy of ours tore 2 out of his truck before he sold it. There is a guy in Salmon Arm that builds a better tranny than they ever will. I don't rememeber the name of his company but i can find out from fota. If you want the best stock tranny of course go with the allison, i'm no chevy mechanic but i haven't seen or heard of one actually going...just alot of hear say. my 2c

The Allison trannies are awesome, best tranny ever put into a diesel pickup thus far. If you like blowing up trannies, Dodge is the way to go. If you don't, go with the Duramax. In the real world they're just as durable as the Cummins and the transmission will actually hold together under normal towing.

cummins engine/allison tranny/ would be the best combo IMO

ive got a 04 duramax and anyone thats been behind my diesel knows that my injectors are fucked right up! i was lucky enough to get the faulty injectors in my gm and havent had the time to take it in to get fixed, soon though i hope, oh and it just broke over 200,000 clicks on it 2 days ago!

yeah, he wanted to put in a B&E torque converter and beef up the dodge but it would void his drivetrain warranty or something. so seemed like it was stock or money pit no in between with the dodge

thx for all the info ill pass what i get along to gramps.

also the dodge has 230kms the chev has 30kms.

im pretty sure he said the chip was put in by dodge themselves, and they said it would not harm the tranny at all. two trannies later he pulled the chip and is looking at the new truck.

Yes you have to put pretty good money into the Dodge trans but once done they are supposed to be much stronger than the Allison light truck trans can be built.

Check out some of the Cummins forum boards and you will see lotsa guys runnin 800+ hp CTD Dodges at the drags and the sled pulls with the beefed up 47rh trannys running in them reliably
