oil change 5W-40 or 15W-40

A couple of weeks ago just before a long trip to the top of B.C. I stopped into an oil change place. They wanted $220 for an oil change. They said the only oil I can run is 5W-40 Synthetic. When I said I just wanted the standard 15W-40 oil they were like deer in the headlights. In fact the guy had to ask his supervisor where they kept that grade of oil…they actually had to go look for it. The bill was $89.00 Yes I know it’s easy to change the oil but I was out of time and just needed it done.

What do you guys run in your Dodge?

How often are you changing your oil. The book shows every 24000 KM or once a year

Dear God! 24000km ? wow! The lubrication guide states that standard engine oil should be changed every 5000km or 3 months, this is because the additive package that is added to the oil breaks down and dissipates. Once this occurs, the oil cannot protect against carbon build up, the viscosity lessons, condensation in the motor adds to oil contamination etc. list goes on. People and manufactures prolong the service intervals due to using full synthetics, this you can do but I personally would not go even half that long. Im going to guess here and say the 5-40 instead of the 15-40 is due to the clearances in the engine, turbo etc now. Engines now like yours are now a 24 valve, tighter components, and require immediate lubrication upon start up. If its cold, and you've used a conventional oil at 15-40, upon starting its not going to hit the top end of the motor for a number of seconds which will lead to wear and damage, and the thermal heat protection that a synthetic oil offers is higher than a conventional. I presume with the higher pony they now run, and all the new emission crap added to the engine, (DPS FILTER) it restricts the aspiration causing the engine to work harder which in turn causes more heat, requiring better lubrication, as poor oil causes more friction, which in turn is converted to heat, which leads to component break down.

Cause I have a Yanke truck I change it on the 5's so every 5000 miles. With religion. I use the 15-40.

I think 24000 is a bit of a strech Kev.

That's all 24,000 ? could have stretched it a bit longer......

I change the oil in my 97 every 8000kms, in my 82 every 3000kms.

As far as synthetic, bunch of crap as far as I am concerned....I have run both types in different applications and the only thing that's different is the amount of money that is left in my pocket.

There is a difference between "wall mart" oil and say castrol, other than that oil is basically oil, synthetic is a just plain old oil with more additives in it.

There are lots of opinions on oil and their properties and it would be good to hear them.

I use 5-30 in the winter, and 10/30 in the summer.

Just my 2 cents...

Silly question,,did they change the filter ?

Sometimes they don't depending on weather its internal or spin on...

You use your truck as a truck so you might want to change the tranny oil more often....
