What about dobermens. If you train them right they are the perfect dog. Love those dogs. Great and loyal.

I have heard some bad things about Cocker Sapniels with inevitably changed my mind about getting one. Friends have said they are snappy and not the best with kids. And yes they have owned them and ended up finding them other homes without kids.

I'm still for the Lab or Golden retrievers... Ya at first they have a bit of energy but no where near a Border Collie. If you make sure and train the dog correctly you wont have to worry about the dog jumping on people or taking you for a walk instead of vice versa.

Good luck on your search and I do agree with someone who said it all depends on how you raise the dog. Not just breed type. There's just stereo types and people's personal history with specific breeds.

Edit: and ya I agree with Jay... I can hear kev now "fuckin dog ...... i need a beer"

dont confuse the american cocker spanial with the english cocker spanial to very different breed profiles. English cockers are pretty rare on this side of the pond so it is almost always that when a person refers to a "cocker spanial" in north america they are refering to the most common type ,the American cocker . English cocker are bred to be working dogs still so temperment brains and physical soundness are requirements that are still taken into account when breeding. unfortunatly the American cocker was ruined by fashion so they basicly had the brains bred out of them like so many other show dogs and comprimised the soundness of the dogs. fashion and show rings have ruined and distorted more breeds then it has helped , they have basically created characatures of once usefill breeds.

there was a well put together show on nova lastnight that touched on that subject that i think anyone interested in dogs would have enjoyed

I know we are a bit dog nutty but I really think that a bit of investigation in dogs and thier backgrounds would create many happy pet owners and happy pets.

border collies are great, you do have to keep them entertained because if they get bored they might eat your couch (mine did) but if you throw a ball once a day they'll love you forever. They are very smart they love the disciplinarian owner and will just look at you all the time for direction. Great dogs
