View Full Version : The Soapbox Car

07-02-2009, 09:01 PM
So with my mech engineering class we entered the Canary Soapbox Derby with the goal this year of having the craziest, coolest, most aerodynamic, and a car that stood out from the everyone elses

The Canary Derby is a soapbox race put together by the technology comunity of Vancover Island to raise money for cancer research. I entered with the Camosun mechanical engineering students team (we race against companies that might hire us)

So here is some pictures of the other cars that were made this year

So this is is the lid of the car being machined out on the 5 axis CNC mill

The bottom being cut out on the CNC water jet cutter

The bottom almost done on the 5-axis CNC mill, the green stuff is bondo to give it a smoother finish

This is the bottom with the axels and steering put in it

First time anyone was in it this was the first run

This is the top lid which is made out of carbon fibre right after being popped out of the mold

This is the first time the bottom of the car was put together with the top, this was just a test fit so we knew how much to cut off

This is after a coat of black paint, the lid being installed using a 4-link set up, and the pyrotechnic pods being put in the back

This is half of one of the pods that hold the cameras that are used to drive the car, I designed these pods.

This is the wiring in the back before it was all cleaned up, about 1/3 of it is covered up by the battery

This is all the wiring for the video feed to the VR Goggles, I spent about 2 hours drawing up complete wiring diagrams for the cameras, VR Goggles, and pyrotechnics, the video feed goes through 2 buttons so you hit neither button to look forward, the left button to look left and the right button to look right

A picture of the back sub, and battery (which is scaryily mounted beside the drivers head)

This is the car on the ramp on race day

This is a picture of the driver getting ready to drive it, funny enough before you drive this car you pull a toque over your eyes...

This is the first wheel we broke after one of the rear disk brakes locked up sending the car sideways into a ditch collapsing one of the rear tires.

This is the crash that happened after a lil kid walked out infront of the car going 50km/h causing the driver to swerve to miss the kid... and get bent going over the curb and about 5 feet from the road into a garden throwing the battery 2 feet from the car

Once it was done
it weighed 190lbs

It had a full car audio sound system with 2 6x9 speakers, a 8" sub, an amp, and an ipod jack.

It has 8 pyrotechnic charges (if you ask nice enough I will load up a video of testing out the pyro system)

Carbon fibre top

3 cameras feeding into VR Goggles,

4-link set up to open the top

We set a record for the fastest time at the halfway mark of 44km/h

Our fastest speed at the finish line was 54km/h

We set a time record for the course on the run that sent the car into the garden after it crossed the finish line.

(all those records are set for the 4 times the race has happened)

So do you think we met all of our goals for that car?

[cheers] yup

I am going to try to convince people to go with an LCD screen mounted to the lid so that when it goes over bumps the goggle and camera bouncing won't disorintate the drive so much, also try to find away to get a panaramic display from the 3 cameras onto one screen (get a view closer to the real thing)

sweet man i'm in mech at bcit

looks like a pretty sweet project

a group of hot rodders here in the okanagan started the I.S.B.R.A belive it's the illegal sopa box racings associtaion or somthing like that they close of strees at like 7am on sunday moringings and have big races,, lots of cool hot rodd inspired boxes,, average speeds of like 80km's n shit.. pretty bad ass,, there is like 50year old dudes doing it...

youtube search, illegal soap box racing and you will get wicked vids from sanfran n shit [36]

pretty nice, but i don't really understand where the soap goes :dontknow:

cool man

very cool

very nice build. NICE and high tech

07-03-2009, 01:06 PM
very cool build.
But if the point of this is to beat your competitors and potential future employers why add so much weight and rolling resistance by installing a large battery and sound system

07-03-2009, 01:27 PM
shut up Phil

07-03-2009, 05:48 PM
Very cool project for sure!
Nice work all around, and the camera idea is very interesting! Top notch fabrication.
Too bad a freakin kid! had to ruin it.... Kids.... always ruining us adults fun! LOL!

What happens when the VR crashes? Guess you crash too?

07-03-2009, 08:39 PM
very cool build.
But if the point of this is to beat your competitors and potential future employers why add so much weight and rolling resistance by installing a large battery and sound system

Because we understand the concept of conservation of energy and the conversion of potential energy to kinetic energy. Since it is on an hill the more weight at the back the more potential energy to convert to kinetic, this effect is amplified by the fact that the finish line is flat and the ramp is angled. For rolling resistance if you are refering to inertia which the terms you are using is suggesting you would be mistaken since we used light weight aluminum racing bike tires mounted on wheel chair hubs with ceramic bearings. around the wheels are low profile bike tires... But thanks for trying.

The goggles should not crash because we replaced all of the connections with soldering it together so no cords could jiggle loose. for the goggles to crash the battery would have to die or for the cameras to break, if that happens we have 2 extras. But if the Goggles or cameras were to crash, break or just stop working the driver immediatly brakes and stops the car as fast as possible

Thats cool! You able to make carbon body parts for trucks?

07-19-2009, 12:23 AM
Not really, for the top we worked out a deal with a local company to let us use their shop and supplies for advertisement and tax reciepts.

was the top vacume bagged ?

08-12-2009, 12:49 PM
is there a weight limit on the vehicle? and this may sound stupid but is the speaker is to create a simple sort of elctromagnetic pulse propulsion device or is it just a speaker ?

very interesting project looking forward to hearing more.

09-09-2009, 08:43 AM
There was a weight limit to it. I think it is 350 lbs for combined weight of car and driver. And the speaker is just a speaker.

where's the pyrotechnic video?
