what a long day and a half. left vancouver at 11:30pm monday night, drove to kennewick washington, got there at 6am. got all the paperwork done and hit the road for the drive back at 8am. dropped the truck off at the inlaws and just got home. getting the truck through the border was pretty painless. Only cost $172 for gst. no duty. Truck ran and drove awesome.... except for one minor fuel leak which was an easy fix. and the gas gauge didnt work so stopped every 150km for fuel. Truck doesnt have a tach, but she cruizes good at 110km.
One let down was it has a inline 6.... not the 283 that was advertized.

will post some new pics of her tomorrow and start a build thread.[cheers]

Good deal. The 283 is pretty fantastic for sure, but I dunno bout for a 4x4. More so for a highwinding gasser or somethin. Get yourself a 292 inline 6. You can find them in the big trucks and buses from the late 60's thru early 80's. Super low end torque engines, and theres LOTS of aftermarket support for them. Best of all, will bolt in!
Younger bro is building a '60 GMC 1/2 ton, so I have a little experience with em. Actually looked at 2 more '61's on sunday. A Longbox and a shortbox step-side.

Its not too hard to tell the differences between the 235, 250 and 292. Get some pics of the engine and I can tell you what it is. If its a 292, dont get rid of it. It will move out pretty good, and a 5 speed camaro trans swapped in would make for some bottom end pull and an overdrive to bring the revs down.

MetalMan
07-01-2009, 10:10 AM
Doesn't matter, the 283 is no better than the 6, they both need to be swapped out for something better. The guys who think a 283 can make good power have no idea what good power is. No replacement for displacement

Spedley
07-01-2009, 05:19 PM
The guys who think theres no replacement for displacement usually are the ones who build ho hum, generic granola smallblocks that anyone can build. I've seen at least 4 300 inch and smaller engines dip into the 10 second 1/4 range in full body Nova's, and thats just at the teeeeeenie little track here. The smaller stuff is soooooooooo much cooler. Straight 6's are great too, and with a split exhaust manifold and dual exhaust sound waaay cooler than a V8. Go check it out on youtube. Maybe not a 7000rpm tire shredder, but a 4000rpm drivable, torquey thing for sure.

Some people don't need to over compensate with a big motor. I am more impressed with something like a 283 that can trump a dime a dozen 350. Every motor has its ups and downs sure if they still made it there would be more people using them. Sounds like u found a nice project good luck keep us updated

My Dad and I used to run a 297 ci SBC in a 69 CJ5 at the sand drags she made 650hp at 11,000 rpm. It would pull 100 yard sand drags in 4.1 secs

heres some pics. first things i plan to do is:

tidy up the wiring under the hood
Install new blue carpet in the cab
either new bench seat or a blue seat cover
get replacement piece for the horn on steering wheel
install a radio.... still havent decided where to put speakers..... i hate the idea of them in the door.
change all oils, grease job etc, c/o front bearings etc.
drop the front 3 inches, the rear 2
chrome mirrors and bumper/grill.

then body work, get rid of the saddle tanks and those stupid doors on the side of the box.

did it myself. faxed a copy of the bill title and a form from us customs 72hours prior to exporting...... then drove across. The us guy just checked the vin number and stamped the title. the canadain side had to go in fill out a form and pay the 5% gst. then done.

got some work done today despite the rain.

the gas gauge and temp gauge werent working. so traced some wires did some tests and found a loose plug going to the gauge cluster. Still needs a new fuel sending unit, and thats been ordered.

installed hella h4 headlights onto her.
got all the lights working, couple burnt out bulbs, couple bad ground connections.

cleaned up the interior as best as i could, started looking around to find new carpet for it. might be looking for a seat as well.

installed a custom rad overflow bottle ( old water bottle)

figured out theres something wrong in the distributor. needs new points, so i'll pull it out tomorrow and have a good look at it.

lubed all the hinges etc. surpisingly they are all in good shape.

checked over the steering and brakes. no play in anything, lots of lining left. hell the e brake even works[36]

steering wheel is missing the horn cap. I know i could just put an aftermarket steering wheel on. but plan is to keep it looking as stock as possible. so i went to kms.... the car part section and ordered a new horn cap.

1 question i have though. the front park lights. they work when you have just the park lights on, but when the headlights are on the front park lights go off. the tail lights still work. Is this normal??

Nicely done.
Let me kno if I can help with used parts. Theres a few around here I can get some pieces from if needed. Might even have a spare horn button if bro isnt gonna use the extra he has. Shipping could be a bitch on some things tho.
For what its worth, as far as I know, the seat mount is the same from the 60's thru the late 90's. BUT, the 90's era seat will not look as cool as a re-upholstered original one.

Toyquad
07-07-2009, 08:32 AM
if he wants to sell the horn piece let me know. Im pricing a new one out.

the seat in there isnt original. i wish it wash cause i would've got re-done.

trev, the thing with the lights, its probably in the push pull switch, corrosion in them can cause this problem.

got some progress on it this weekend.

changed the points and condensor. got a lesson from the father inlaw on how to use a dwell meter, that was kinda cool. Runs way better now.
changed the coolant.
greased the front end
replaced the missing box mounting bolts. Then put her to work, the inlaws just replaced there deck and stairs..... So we loaded her up with the junk and took it to the dump.
then gave her a wash, cleaned out the bed etc.

I had ordered a new lock set, put the driverside door lock, glove box lock, and ignition tumbler in. When i had it apart i noticed the ignition switch itself was fucked. so ordered a new one of those.

horn cap is still a couple weeks away. I'm trying to decide what colour and style carpet i want. any suggestions? They can either get modern carpet.... or woven(sp?) like it had originaly.
