..that almost rhymed.

Had a great dive out at Neck Point on Saturday, with my friend just certified on Friday!.. Wanted to show him more than they do at your test (sandy, silty, Whytecliff park kicked up by students - not a sea critter in sight).. and he is IMPRESSED!

What a great dive, so close to home... shame about the walk up and over that hill with all our gear... next time.. wheelbarrow.. for SURE.

Finally got my underwater camera 'dialed in' and am getting some pretty decent shots!

..on with the show!

Exploring the walls.. pretty rich with life, even this close to the city!

Lots of these huge and gorgeous soft corals, orange Sea Pens (really cool at night - when you touch them, they emit bioluminescence in this pulsing alien way... very cool)

..an anemone (say it 3 times fast - an anemone, anennemony anenennenomenenome)

Looking through to the surface..

..and finally, this little guy to say "come back soon!"

...and my personal 'fave' of the day:

...next up... a dive at Keel Cove.. and a small wreck.

@Jeepnut: Didn't see any worth eating =(

@Gaybait: A few weekends to get certified... Dive & Sea sports in New West is my recommendation!

@Troy: I don't get cold at all! I use a neoprene dry suit. I didn't even need my fleece underneath.. t-shirt, joggers, wool socks.. comfy! Dry gloves now too as you can see in one of the pics of my buddy, he's in an 'ultra-lite' drysuit, not neoprene, more like a canvas material - a bit colder, but you can still wear layers underneath...

I did wetsuit dive for years and years... but I'm glad to be in a drysuit now, that's for sure. Especially when you're suiting up for that second dive, no more squeeeeeezing into a wet and cold wet suit!

bring me some damn sea urchin yet!

mista fitz

To those that asked, I'm using a pretty 'entry level' Sea & Sea camera and housing, with a Sea & Sea YS-27DX Strobe.. it's a real bugger to get good pictures out of, a lot of times I have to 'trick' the spot metering to get it to do what I want (no 'real' manual settings, only +/- EV and such)

(I laugh when it's 'entry level' and around $1000 for the whole setup. argh.)

@Epic.. no urchin yet.. is it really good?

really? I've seen the inside of those (fed them to wolf eels to get them out of their dens)... and they DO NOT look tasty at all.

alright.. I'll give it a go... I'm imagining a more jello-like oyster... (which I don't really care for either)

..but.. I haven't met an animal I wouldn't eat yet.. so.. why not.

04-15-2009, 03:45 PM
yeah, I know what it looks like.. not looking forward to it... looks brown/orange and the surface of it looks like my tongue... it's actually the gonads of the animal.. lovely.

Heey... so I talked to my neighbor about eating urchin the other day, and he says, oh, they've got that down the street at the sushi place... let's go try a piece each, and a beer (just in case).

Not bad. Very 'low tide' flavour.. like getting a wave full of sea weed and salt in the face.. the taste actually reminded me of this.

I think it will be much better when I harvest it fresh.

I've got pictures, but can't seem to get them off my cel phone right now...

It's waaaaay nicer than I thought it would be. The texture even.. it was fine... kind of like really soft trout. I want to try it really fresh though... we'll find out soon.

I don't know! That's my friend's mask!

Honestly, I haven't bought a 'fancy' mask in all my years of diving (14 years!).. all of my masks have been under $30, and probably from Canadian Tire! LOL

Some of the gear you can buy these days is just ridiculous.. no fins in a dive store under $200.. COME ON. No masks under $100.. SERIOUSLY.

No wonder people think this is an expensive sport. :confused0006:
