I've heard rumors in a couple places that they'll be "gone" in a couple of years but have a hard time believing the government would shut down what basically amounts to yet another $$ grab.

That's what I've read... dunno if it's true or not but they're hoping by 2011 it'll be done :)

I think all obd2 cars get scanned before they do anything if there's a fault code you fail regardless of anything

Yup, OBD2 gets plugged in and if you have any codes stored or it won't read (ie stand alone system) it's an automatic fail.

Your gas cap was probably loose some time close to when you went in there, the computer has a sensor for the tank for evaporative emissions and can sense when there is a leak, ie. loose cap, and will store it as a code for "X" amounts of cycles and if you show any codes you will fail the air care test. It is always a good idea to check for codes on OBD II stuff before you go in just in case of meaningless codes that will fail you.

Gas cap loose would probably be a P0440 - gross leak detected. I think there's a TSB for P0456 on the Dakotas, ask your Chrysler dealer if you can find a useful one. Also on the Dodges, the LDP were known for causing lots of evap codes, wasn't one of Dodges brighter engineering feats.

TSB 18-002-03

Fix is to reflash the PCM to avoid P0456

See if this link works:

http://arrc.epnet.com/autoasp/framerq.asp

If not, try this one, use "ID" for user ID and "password" for password. Punch in your year, make, model then look at service bulletins, you'll find the TSB for it.

i never got plugged in on the cruiser when i got aircared.? do they do that to all OBDII vehicles? its BS that they make you pay, then tell you your code is an auto fail. was there a cel on? alot of the times, codes dont necessarily mean emissions fault. but aircare will give that an automatic fail. they dont state that cels will give you an auto fail, they just disclose that it may cause it to fail.

fuck aircare. if i pay my $48, damn strait ill be demanding that itll be going on the rollers. its total BS that they make you pay and NOT test you for whatever bullshit reason.

I ask for the calibration reports every time i go to aircare. Any instrument that is measuring and your paying for that measurement has be be calibrated at least every year. I got a free pass on my MG by saying that. They have never but my cruiser on rolls. It is a 92 diesel they look for the obd2 plug every year

how does aircare work if you do a motor swap? do they test to the new engine's emission standard or the vehicles?

the vehicle unless you've re registered it with the new engine but then the engine must be newer then the vehicle

before i scanned it i thought the light onmy dash was for a cyl 1 miss fire
i was not aware or the looming evap code

also i asked them to put it on the rollers and they said they arnt allowd too :dontknow:

Well if it did have the P0301, you definitely would have failed (if it was misfiring at the time of test).

Guess it might be worth it to have a $125 code reader/clearer if you have to go through air care. Read and clear the codes just before going in. Not sure if they would fail it for a P1000 though (incomplete moniter test), anyone know?

I heard jan 1st 2011 the contract is up. It does not mean aircare will be gone just that the contract is up and they will prolly be taking other bids.

Talkin about retarded codes that OBD2 throws at ya, my jeep threw me the old 'battery temp sensor' code... WTF is a battery temp sensor... in any case I put a new one in and was finally able to pass aircare!!

'battery temp sensor' I've scanned lots of obd2 stuff now and haven't seen that. That be a hard one to try and tell a customer about...

oh and FUCK AIRCARE!

nbrowser
04-09-2009, 10:24 PM
Yeah, now the car is supposed to monitor battery temp....supposedly to see if the alt is charging it correctly or not n shit......and it the batt temp goes up, the ECU can turn off the alt output n shit.....pretty soon the ECU will have total control over the vehicle to the point the novice wrench can't even change it's oil.....

Only had a bat temp sensor code once, it was on a Cummins. Turns out there was a reflash to take care of it. Now why that particular code would be a fail at aircare is fucking stupid. Maybe it's about time they start having aircare operated by journeyman mechanics who know their shit. At least they could decipher whether a MIL is cause for a fail or not depending on the code.

stop your bitchin.

I failed aircare not once, not twice, hell, not even 3,4 or 5 times.. SIX FUCKING TIMES!!!

I spend over 500 bucks trying to get it to pass.
I had to take it to a shop.

still didn't pass (one of the 3 bad parts in the emissions control system is no longer available)

I had to get a waiver ( but they are good for 2 years where i'm at)
