Forum spambots

Forum spambots surf the web, looking for guestbooks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guestbooks), wikis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki), blogs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog), forums (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_forum) and any other web forms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Form_(web)) to submit spam links to the web forms it finds. These spambots often use OCR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_character_recognition) technology to bypass CAPTCHAs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAPTCHA) present. Some spam messages are targeted towards readers and can involve techniques of target marketing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Target_market) or even phishing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phishing), making it hard to tell real posts from the bot generated ones. Not all of the spam posts are meant for the readers; some spam messages are simply hyperlinks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperlink) intended to boost search engine ranking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine_ranking).
This category of spambots has gained considerable notoriety since November 2006, with the introduction of XRumer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XRumer), a forum and wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki) spambot which can often bypass many of the safeguards administrators use to reduce the amount of spam posted.
The easiest way to prevent spambots from posting on forums, wiki, guestbook, etc. is to enable email activation by installing a mail server on the host (eg: Sendmail, Postfix, Exim.), since most spambot scripts use fake or randomly generated names on real email providers, the emails will mostly never be successfully routed to them.

Spam bots are all about money, like PJsTJ said, they spam links often, to boost page rank.

Boosting page rank means a number of things, means when you google a search term that your page will be 'earlier' in the listings. The higher the page rank, the more $$ that domain is worth if you ever want to sell it. My husband does domain trading and I'll be honest I don't entirely understand why anybody would pay tens of thousands of dollars, for something which basically amounts to a combination of letters. (Domain is just the http://www.whateveryouwant.com bit, doesn't include the actual site content or the hosting, or anything)

A lot of spambots also will lead to what are called parking pages, these are for people who buy domains and simply "park" them instead of develop them... they sign up with a variety of sponsors who have advertisements on these parking pages, and then there's usually a pay per click option. So then, there's 2 sources of revenue. One in the number of clicks that are received and one in the resale value of the domain itself.

They aren't people trying to make people's lives harder, they're really just a script... / program, that when set up & launched, goes off and does its thing, armed with the links and/or search terms it was programmed to advertise.
