Alright here is my predicament...

I have a 79 w200 with a dana 44 front end and a dana 60 ff rear.

Right now I am running 3.55:1 gears and 38" tires (both are open differentials)

I want to run lower gears so I am going to deal with everything at once.

So the front end...

Can a dana 44 be built strong enough to handle 38" tires with a 4:11 or 4:56 gears with either a limited slip or posi? It will be a chevy dana 44 that will go in if i choose the dana 44 route (I wont have the CAD dodge axle). Basically im thinking of chromoly axles and the best u joints i can find.

Or

Dana 60?

Rear end...

Goal: Near bulletproof diff with 38" tires, detroit locker, 4:10 or 4:56 gears

I recently rebuilt the dana 60 ff that is in the truck less than 200 km ago. But i do have a 14 bolt ff. From the reading I have done, it seems like 14 bolts are preffered. I know it seems like a waste to ditch the rebuilt dana 60, but my first priority with this truck is to have to do as few trail repairs as possibly, and while im changing gears, Im going to change diffs while im at it to have as solid drivetrain as possibly.I will also be converting either the dana 60 or 14 bolt to disk brakes

What mods must be done to put the 14 bolt into a 79 power wagon?
Is it worth it to build the 14 bolt or just to change gears and put a detroit locker in the dana 60?

Input appreciated

Thanks,
Billy

d44 limits are 35... maaaybe 36. nad thats with all the aftermarket stuff thrown at them.

my geuss on the 14 bolt id welding new perches on...14 ff is the best rear diff IMO.

if you want to drive it like it owe's you some thing ;)

buy the time you build a 44 u may as well have done a 60 for the fullsizes the 14 bolt has many benifits over the rear 60 other than it's larger and you will lose some clearance ... build it once build it right and you won't have issues cause there enought other stuff that can go wrong when out enjoying the great outdoors

I guess you have a 360 in that truck; I've beat the crap out of my D60 rear, its still alive but I'd throw aftermarket shafts if I was going to lock the rear.
