View Full Version : My New 4x4... full of goodies!

So here are pics of the 83 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 I bought 2 weeks ago. The exhaust is new and really loud. Supposedly the engine is a 90's 350, only 80,000 kms on it. Has an eldebrock intake and a custom fan plus a 4 core rad. So far I know it has a 4 speed auto with overdrive and a 14 bolt rear end. The day I bought it in Chwk my wife drove our Silverado home and I drove the gmc. The Silverado speedo said 120 and the speedo in the 83 GMC was wrapped past 160 so I think the gears may be 4:56. I still have to check. I noticed new bolts in rear diff cover so maybe it has a locker. If its 4:56 gears, I'll switch diffs with my Jimmy and switch the engines. Then sell the truck to buy a Jeep body for my Jimmy Frame. So you guessed it.... I'm looking for a full jeep tub with all body parts with hopefully no rust and doors\roof too. Maybe a CJ5 or a Willys if I'm really lucky....

Anyone recognize this truck? If you do, anything you know about the engine, driveline.... Old Hydro truck maybe??

It has a box liner, headache rack, and no rust in fenders!

Anyone recognize it? I think I used to see it in Chwk when I lived there...

The previous owner caught the door on a post so this the most bodywork to fix...

I think it may have the 10.5" dia. ring gear and 4:56 gears. The guy that sold it to me said it is a 5/4 ton

So... this fan just for lots of steady cooling.... It has a 4 core rad. I wonder if its a 400 sb?

Edelbrock intake?

just because it has new diif bolts doesnt mean a locker do a burn out and see how many tires u smoke.

Looks good, I not sure what a 5/4 axle is.....

03-25-2009, 12:23 PM
the 5/4th was used commonly by old timers, and it Generally was only refered to as such when it was a military vechicle. they were 1 1/4 ton.. not 1 ton.

Its just a FF14 bolt

Ahh, thank you....

Well looks like only one wheel spins:( I jacked up one wheel and it spins freely. Took the diff cover off and stamped on the carrier is:

2GM 3977334 10 41 4 75

So I guess its only 4:10's:( My Jimmy already has 4:10's and I was hoping for 4:56. I thought "4 75" was 4:75's but the crown has 41 teeth and the pinion 10. Plus I've never heard of 4:75's and I think I know better...

Soooo.... I'll check the block now to see if its a 400, and if its a 4 bolt main, plus the compression. If its good I'll switch engines with my Jimmy. But then again I still got that 454 but it has no compression in #7 cyl. Either way put the 305 in the gmc pick-up and sell it whole... more moola to fix the 454 or buy a jeep body for the Jimmy.:confused0006:

Well found out the carb is a quadrabog, #17057213AWP 0467, but I don't know what the cfm is. Anyone know? I think its a 1977 though.

The Intake is a Edelbrock Performer. Would there be any id #'s on it? Maybe where on the intake?

Quadra jets are good for off road. they work well off camber and other angles.
don't ditch it right away.

I agree completely. I used to have a CJ-5 with a 375hp 350 in it running on a 800 cfm Quad. It ran awesome at angles and didn't pig the gas 'till the 4 bbls opened, then you could watch the guage drop!

04-05-2009, 11:34 AM
So you guys think the carb is a 800 cfm and the engine is a 74 350 370 HP?

04-05-2009, 11:50 AM
nope thats definately 950 double pumper super chevy special edition with 500 HP. I heard after 300,000km the horsepower rating doubles

04-05-2009, 12:27 PM
lol be nice there troy and godtool its not 800cfm you would be so over fueling it would never run and that 350 unless cranking 600+hp would never be able to use the amount of air that thing would ram down its throat

04-05-2009, 01:25 PM
I don't think that motor is as old as u think. Centerbolt valve covers weren't until 86 if I am not mistaken. Quadrajets are good carbs as they have the 750cfm but the primary is smaller then the secondary so u can still get economy when u don't stomp on the loud pedal. They do need to be rejetted to get the performance u want though as they where all setup for economy. But from what I have read if u mount an edelbrock carb onto a stock intake u need an adapter and I believe u need the samething for the opposite going from the quadrajet to the edelbrock. Does the intake have a egr valve on it or is it not there at all because most likely its a #2104 if that is an 86 or newer motor.

TAKE THAT FAN THE THROW IT IN THE GARBAGE. Heard stories of those things cracking and going through the hood clutch fans that came on them stock are great.

04-06-2009, 05:27 AM
Hey Thanks for the info. [cheers] The block, it may have newer heads on it I'm told. There is no egr valve on it just, carb, dist, thermostat. I have a spare clutch fan too. I have a 750 Quadrejet on my 305 in my Jimmy since it was the best carb I had when my 400 threw a rod. Some say the 750 is too big but it runs really good, especially ince I bought a new fuel pump with the return line. As for this 350, the vin in the 83 gmc truck says it had a 350 in it to begin with. I'm going to Chilliwack today so I'll stop at the GM there since one of the parts guys really knows his stuff so maybe he still works there... I forgot his name when I used to live there. There is also that hot rod place on yale rd west.:)

quadrabogs are a type of vacuum secondary, and no carb rams fuel or air
air doors will only open to meet airflow demands of the engine

04-07-2009, 06:58 AM
Well no time to go to GM yesterday and the hot rod shop is gone on yale rd west... looks like the new overpass is there now in the making.

It seems this tranny in the truck has 4 gears and then overdrive. It seems it hits 3rd by the time you get across and intersection, 4 around 80 kms-90 and then past a 100 goes into o/d. It appears to be a 700R4 but could someone have put a 5 speed auto in it or modified a 4 speed? Where is the id tag on these?

I tried using this link for id'ing it....

I think I will pull the 350 for myself and part it out.

05-08-2009, 02:01 AM
it most likely has a lock up converter in it .....the quadrabogs are an awsome carb take a look at Jet carbs they buld them up for drag racing and have been on everything from the 305 to the 325hp 396 from the factory

05-08-2009, 05:41 AM
probly a 4 speed and whe you think it is shiftign that last shift..it is just lockign the torque converter to the input...makes it feel like another gear and lower RPM another approx 10%

05-08-2009, 07:09 AM
Thanks! Other thing I've found out is some 4x4ers use the 700R4 tranny for the overdrive getting to the trail head with those low, low diff gears and then the 1st gear ratio in the tranny is lowest of all the gm trannys at 3:1 for a slow first gear. So... I'm thinking of using it in my Jimmy with a np205 I just got. Plus use the 350 out of the blue truck in my Jimmy[36] The downside is I hear the th350 which I already am using in my Jimmy is stonger than the 700R4 for hardcore 4x4ing

05-08-2009, 10:02 AM
i know a few guys that have used the 700r4 for drag racing with out a problem its just in how its built and there are lots of parts out there for it .....if your set on using a 4sp auto look for a 4l80e its a th400 with over drive
