dirka dave

Well sometimes you must go back before you can go forward, so to speak...

Brakes are the most important saftey feature ( tires are 2nd) and after last weekend I noticed a drip of oil from my right rear drum.

Well it turns out it is my axle seal..

So I pulled the fronts and my right front bearing is too tight...

So I bought $460 worth of brake parts yesterday...

This is 2X as expensive as my 82'.

At lest when this is done I will be able to stop with the new lift when it goes in.

looks good. i just did the same lift on my taco, except rear leafs.

have you noticed a difference in gas mileage with the flowmaster? i was going to do it but have been reading that the toyota computer goes in trouble and starts dumping extra fuel to make it run rich. good for power, bad for mileage.

I have noticed a bit more power and torque with the Flowmaster..

Not sure about the fuel mileage yet. On average I get 450kms to a tank. (60l tank)

You only get 450 km per tank? I get that in my Cruiser. Would have thought you'd get better milage.

Anyone put a body lift in my generation 4runner (96-02, i beleve)

I want to put in a 2" lift and there seems to be nothing availiable.

I was wondering if a kit from another year/model would work.

Thanks.

I know, all in fun..

I just would like to buy a bolt in kit with all the stupid brackets for the bumpers ans rack/pinion steering.

I fabed the kit for my 82', I just thought this time around it would be nice to have someone else do the thinking and for me to just do the installing.

said steering had enough slip that he didnt have to mmod it to accomidate the lift........weather or not all this is true i dunno but it did have a body lift and 33s.... ill snap a shot of it for u next time hes by.....

Thinking of putting in a 2" body lift to get some tire clearance and to raise up my rear shock mounts.

Anyone done a lift in this generation of runner ?

i put a 1.5" lift from roger brown (4crawler) mostly to clear 315's up front. still needed some firewall massaging though. excellent kit and well worth the money. much better than a PA kit with its solid design vs hollow honeycomb with PA. with our dollar creeping up again, might be a good time to buy. he also can ship to canada via USPS so you dont get raped with brokerage fees. i got mine with upgraded HD hardware, (SS is also available) and the black puck option. everything went in easy. came with the steering rag joint and front bumper lift brackets which ididnt use since i had an arb. rear bumper is body mounted.

truck looks good [36]

oh btw...ive got my wabfab swaybar disconnects if you're interested? $25.

I still have'nt installed my new headlights yet either.[16]

I would start by taking of the the actuator of the diff. It's held in place by the 2 longer studs that also hold the 3rd in place. Removing 2 bolts of the 3rd obviously does nothing for the 3rd coming out or not.

Then I would plug it in while out, if it still doesn't move, start taking the actuator apart. If you suspect the wiring, you can also take that actuator and plug it in under my 4Runner. If it then works, you know it's wiring, if it doesn't you know it's the actuator, which I strongly suspect.

Actuators are know for having issues, check this thread and search for locker actuator motor, you'll find lots of info.
http://www.yotatech.com/f2/e-locker-rebuild-troubles-83166/

I am curious to know how the rack works out, I'll need one in the next year also I think. Mine is at 250K, not much wheeling though, that seems to accelerate the process from what I,ve read on Yotatech.

$540 just for steering!?!
That's half way to one of these: http://www.trail-gear.ca/default.cfm?fa=products&ProdCategoryID=7

The rear end has stiffened up enough that I don't need to put the sway bars back in !

steve604

i've got 285-75-16 goodyear mt/r's on my tacoma with the same suspension setup in the front as you. they rubbed pretty bad so i had to add a spacer to the top of the coil over. i'm at about 3 1/2" of lift in the front and still rubbing.

34's will rub bad and lifting the front high enough to stop rubbing will cause cv axle problems.

unless you put a body lift in it. did you end up putting one in?

RCCruiser
08-23-2009, 04:48 PM
34's are NOT going to fit. Even with that body lift we put in.

dirka dave
08-27-2009, 12:43 PM
why 17's?

I have a greater tire selection with 17" rims.
In some cases I can go up a load range.

I also want to get rid of my aluminum 16" mags before I destroy them on a rock or a curb at wendys.:D

I will probably get a set of 16" all season tires for the summer.

Also with new 17" rims I will be able to change my offset and have more clearance in the front for the calipers and outer tie rod ends.

The downside, if you can call it that, is that I might have to get some sort of flares on it.

d0ubledown
08-30-2009, 08:30 PM
you can fit 315's or even up to a true 35" with some fender massaging and a 1.5" minimum body lift. tacomas share the same suspension geometry yes, but the 4runner has much more room under the fenders, and dont require as much lift as the tacoma. dont need manual hubs...spend that money on a front arb & regear. i had adjustable coilovers up front and were pretty much cranked. CV boot fins werent touching, and even with an arb up front, had no front diff issues.

imo 16's are perfect for the 3rd gen. find some FZJ80 wheels...they're the perfect size & backspace to fit 285s, 295s and 315's. the 80 wheels are very strong and very light...nothing in the aftermarket can even come close to them. id rather spend 5 bills on used 80 wheels than new crap wheels. the 315's will require a minimum of 1" wheel spacer. i had a 1.5" spacer on my setup...cleared the UCA's by a mile. otherwise, aftermarket uca's wont require spacers to clear 315s, or you can shave the UCA like the ones at sonoransteel.com

run the goodyears that you got on your stockers...that'll get you through. youll definitely want to regear once you go higher than a 295 or 34". and by definitely, i mean the 3.4L will be a dog with anything bigger than 285s. doable on stock gears, but no fun trying to accelerate or when wheeling...

RCCruiser
08-31-2009, 03:11 PM
I seriously don't see how it would clear a 34" tire, let alone a 35" tire when worn out 32's rub. Unless you have some beverages and buy a few sawzall blades. But then you could make 49's fit.:dontknow:

No,thats next on the list...

I spent the last two days straighting out the front rad support, installing new headlight buckets, installing new batt and tyding up the electrical ...

Rims & tires, (Should be here nixt week) E locker, then some sliders, and skid plates then bumpers !

:gives:

After suffering with shitty lights and a prangled front end for 4 years I finally took the time to install new headlight buckets ( one of mine had a bullet hole in it, weird :dontknow: ), straighten out the rad support and the headlight mounts.

I intalled a dualfilimant 8000k hid kit. It gives both hi and low beam in HID.

I also remounted my optima on its side, made a new batt hold down and cleaned up the electrical.

( I got some new goodies comming soon so I going to need good power)

Nice job, if you unplug the circled resister pack, you take out your daytime running lights. 1st I did when i got the 4Runner.

I tried that but it turned on my hi beams.

I have to cut the green wire in the DRL module which is located under my dash.[16]

Your's must be newer then, I only had to unplug that module on my '97.

I recall reading about cutting that wire on the newer ones.

I removed the DRL fuse, unpluged the resistor, even the HID's are not supposed to run as DRL's but I guess the Luxo is possesed..

I want to be in control of my lights !!!

I just did a search on Yotatech, and the 01/02 models need to snip a wire. The earlier ones should just unplug the resistor pack next to the battery. I don't know what's going on with yours.

Did the hid wiring change something?

Maybe, There was a relay that comes with the kit, I also have a relay that supplies power to the hella spots, maybe its feeding back through there some how..
