My family who live in Alberta come for a visit.

We and four dogs go for a walk on the mountain today.

When we walking along, I found a weird thing.

It was round with a skull inside.

I worry that the dogs maybe get to close and it have poison on it.

I go look again in the spring-time to see if it is still there.

Lots of muck on the Pathfinder.

My uncle and me go look at it off the trail we were walking on. Grannie and her brother stay on the trail.

We saw no tracks on the snow around the horse, goose cage. The cage was attached to the tree. It must have been there for a long time to have no animal tracks or footprints near it, Weird.

I showed the pics to my boss who's been hunting and trapping longer than I've been alive.
Yup, some hunter is letting nature clean a Bear Skull or Wolf for him. Many do this to protect animals from tearing it apart into pieces, and carry it away. Natural decay is an easy way to clean it if the person is in no hurry. Maggotts, Beatles, Ants, and sun will bleach it completely white when it is done.

That makes sense, still kinda weird though. Maybe it's the angle of the picture but that nose looks weird, and the teeth are sharp, reminded me of a badger or something, but it's pretty big.

I always thought bait hunting was illegal here?:dontknow:

A few years back, out behind Peachland we found a dead sheep that we figured was for bait hunting, but it was like 10 ft off the trail and right near some camping spots. We didn't think it was a cat or anything that did it cause the head was gone and clean cut, also it was gutted.

trappers use crap like that to see what critters will walk to the trap, then you can see the different tracks in the snow.

That looks like the same tests that is put up in the BCIT endowment lands. The test is to measure natural decomposing. Out at 288th in maple ridge they use pigs in the cages.

Definatly not a horse skull,bizzare!

Wierd man...looks horse like to me too.

i think so too Jon, horse or moose. the teeth aren't aggressive enough to be a carnivore and the skull is too elongated and big to be anything onmivorous or just a deer.

bait for a trap I guess, but its pretty big bait for such a small trap.

i've never seen my friend (trapper/hunter) have any traps like that. as someone else mentioned it's too big for bait anyway.

Aliens man, aliens

agreed!!!! haha

Yes. bait hunting is illegal for bears and such, but not for trapping (lynx, bobcat, Cougar (i think), martin, weasel, etc) and that sheep was probably poached if the meat was all still there. if it was hide then somebody was just disposing of the waste from a harvest.

as for the guys saying it is set out to rot naturally.... don't you find that the rodents still get to it and chew out in a cage with spacing that size? it's the rodents that eat the antlers and bones in the wild to decompose them. not disputing whether you do it, just curious as to whether the rodents are ever a problem.

haha my $0.02 :)

cheers

It was meat and hide, the only thing that was missing was the insides and head. it was really weird, we figure it had only been there maybe a day cause it wasn't decomposed or eaten at all lol

it does looklike a basket for cleaning . i have put them in milkcrates wire mesh etc.. but normally put them in the open or elevated not just lying on the ground where they can be picked up and walked off with. perhaps it is a trappers bait station? not sure if i would want the dogs running in the bush around it

in the summer spring there is plenty for mice to knobble on, once it starts to get colder i notice teeth marks on the cartilidgeand some bone on the ones that are sitting out. I have one outside now that has got some mouse carnage but it just adds to it :)
