View Full Version : ford ttb to sas questions

alright im starting to gather parts to pull my ttb and fab in a '79 d44 axle.
cause of cost and simplicity and the level of wheeling im doing, im thinking the leafsprung route.

if anyones done the swap before and has input please let me know.
im doing this all fairly budget, salvaged parts and fab'd parts for the most (no kits or any of that jazz).

got my eye on a leafsprung 79 f250 with complete front axle and suspension to start playing with.

is that a half ton??? the 250 44 will be 8 bolt so youd prolly wanna swap rear too?

also if its half ton i think coils n r-arms would be easier than leafs if ya find a 79 half ton your set

Troy

go with coil springs and extended radius arms, or even the stock 79 arms are longer than your ttb radius arms.

coil sprung rides hella better and is easyer then leaf spring and save your money and buy a 60 fuck that dana 44 shit

If the ford your doing the SAS on is an f150 it would be easier to do the coil sprung swap. Use the 79 and prior f150 bronco diff with its radius arms, move the radius arm brackets back a little way on the frame (the solid axle radius arms are longer than the ttb ones) mount a track bar bracket to the drivers side of the frame and hook up the drag link to your steering box. I have some buddies that have done this swap in a day in the driveway.

Ya coil spring. I have done it twice on two of my budies rigs. Really easy swap. Less fab. use your exsisting coil brackets and like Nutbar said move your raduis arm brackets back or get the 78-79 bronco ones they are lower! mount the track bar to your steering box. Plum the brakes & your done.... Much easier!!!!

not a valid excuse, but im young and never done this swap before.
so good tips are very much appreciated.

it makes more sense to stay coils, instead of maaking a xmember and hangar for the perchs. ive yet to find a build with pics of a coil sas swap for an idea.

end of the month or mid april ill be pickin up a 79 f250 still runs and drives but body and frame are junk. yankin the front d44 and rear 60 to donate to mine.

id like to reuse the '79 radius arms.

the interweb is full of crazy shit and people sayin they had driveshaft angle issues with this swap and that its a NECESCITY to upgrade halfshafts up front. .

anywho im peicin it together now and leavin the coil or leaf thing up in the air till i find out more.

79 f250 wont be coil sprung int the front, halftons were coil, 3/4 n up were leaf. if the 79 front end is the same as a 76 f250, it is a low pinion design, not the greatest for wheelin, ya want a hp.

thrillbilly
03-05-2009, 04:25 PM
this is the highpinion d44 up front, and yes it has leafs up front right now.

rear 60 wont work, your truck needs the sensor in rear end. go for a 10.25, or a 60 out of a 90's ford van for the 8 lug.

m j
03-05-2009, 08:40 PM
hit pick a part for a 90s ford van rear end with disc brakes

also the guys who have done this swap recommend using the coil buckets from a 77-79 f150/bronco, as well as coil springs for the same application

I have seen a few great deals on 6" springs on this forum

I have a couple sets of the weld on wedges from bronco graveyard
real easy to glue them to the axle, only thing you be fabbin is the trac bar mounts and something to strengthen the frame where the rad arm mounts would be

can you post some pics of your trucks rear spring hangers? maybe spot some more factory parts from different years you can use for a shackle flip or a other lowbuck stuff you can look for

Get rid of the leaf sprung shit and stay with coils, leafs suck for flex and u already have coils and shit so leave em you can do the swap in a day,

thrillbilly

yeah whitetrash thats the plan now, gonna keep lookin into shit but im aiming for coils for sure.

m j you can buy the wedges from bronco graveyard? if so will check it out.

and so the 79 d60 wont work, can i keep the 8.8 (whitetrash ur 8.8 drives fine with 36s right?)

i would run the 8.8 till it blows especially if your stickin to a 5lug coil dana 44. but if your heavy on the pedal it wont like 36s.

remeber to get some radius arm caster degree bushings 4, 7 degree etc. depending on lift height and your radius arm setup.

www.fullsizebronco.com (http://www.fullsizebronco.com/)
search all you can in the sas section, there are hundreds of coil d44 swaps over there.

Happypants

I'm really heavy on the skinny pedal with my 36s on the 8.8 in my jeep and it's been good, it blew once but it was just the crappy welds on the spiders when It was welded.

id be putting 35 m/ts, no bigger.
and isnt the '79 d44 a 8lug?
and i havent decided on stock '79 radius arms (maybe extend them..) or pickin up extended ones.
thanks for the resources, will check them out!

fordpower whats your buddy drive i mighta seen it around langley.

and ya whitetrash i think im gonna keep the 8.8 mabe lock it up, its got 200k on it and wasnt beat the piss out of until i got it, so should last a bit more.

thrillbilly
03-07-2009, 06:04 PM
got pics of my rear hangar on the way somepoint tonight or tomorow morning.
its already pretty low but i could get a few inches out of a flip for sure.

and got pics of the donor truck, everything LOOKS solid, but has saggy front leafs. would probably go to Abby Springs and get some built.

fin96
03-07-2009, 06:28 PM
so you plan on 8 lug front, 5 lug rear and have two spares? the 8.8 will probably do fine with 35's but since you wanna throw a locker in you should just start with a 10.25. you can pick up a full floater for dirt cheap and its 95% bolt in. then your 8 lug all around and have the strength if you decide to go bigger.

thrillbilly
03-07-2009, 06:41 PM
depends what kinda deal i can get, didnt really plan on swapping the rear too but you bring a good point.

fullsizebronco has a couple builds that are VERY detailed, thanks again for the link.

found this, thought it was a bit pricey for just the axle but its got alot of moving parts replaced so might be worth it ...

http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/pts/1036249326.html

I have a built front Dana 44 from a '78 bronco, iIjust recently swapped in 4.10 gears (done by Berts in Maple Ridge) new internal seals, new hub seals and slinger seals, new u-joints and I swapped out the original knuckles etc. for F250 knuckles (8 bolt lug pattern), these knuckles are also thicker than the originals were and have the studs in place on the driver side for the factory high steer option, I also installed new Warn Premium manual locking hubs (the gold ones), this axle is installed but has never been used- only used for mocking up my suspension work so far. The rotors have surface rust and iIhave the old 2 piston calipers- take as a core but you should get new ones-reason for selling- immediately after I installed it, I got a dana 60 front axle for christmas. I will be out of town for about 10 days so please contact by email, thanks.

87 f250 should be a sterling 10.25 rear end, semi float.
if its a heavy duty f250 it will be a full float 10.25.

unless the "60" rear end has been swapped in, or is from a E series van

thrillbilly
03-11-2009, 04:11 AM
is it worth puttin a d60 in the rear of mine?

fin96
03-11-2009, 11:48 AM
if your going 44 front a full floating 60 would be a good match for the rear, not to mention some van 60's come with discs already.

if your already thinking about a 60 front just go 10.25 rear, can be bought for cheaper and the buildup will only be a bit more expensive.

with that axle combo you can handle 44"s if you decide some day.

well im gonna start ordering parts soon.
im confident in yankin the ttb and collecting parts, but for budget wise and the wheeling im gonna be doing.. im gonna bitch out and go d44.

and if it does cause problems yall have the right to say i told you so down the road.

for ordering parts, i will NEVER go to sport trucks unlimited again. i hear national is near Dams ford but ive never found it.. wheres a good shop local to langley to tlak to about parts.

i would say order online, sport trucks sucks, national, i duno what the hells wrong with them but it seems to take them 2-3 months for there shit to arrive for some reason, if you dont have plastic, goto money mart and get one of them mastercard things that you put cash on then you can use it online to get parts for your truck, only costs 10 bucks for it,

i would reccomend jeep thrills though for ordering parts, talk to B on here, hes good shit,

90s d60 or 80-90s sterling?

Troy

any sterling will work in your truck from 84-97'

d60 doesn't really matter what year as it will be custom fitted

thrillbilly

pretty much equal strength, so whatever pops up first i guess. i think theres more aftermarket support for the d60 tho.. ?

oh i thought you meant what year dana 60 FRONT.

ya most d60 rears will bolt up but most stock shafts are 1.3'' diameter 30 spline twigs. lots of guys like to put the bigger d70 35 spline shafts into the d60 rear housing, but it requires boring the spindle out to fit the new shafts.

sterling ford 10.25 have 35 spline, 1.5'' axle shafts

most dana 70 have 35 spline 1.5'' axle shafts

all these rear ends have pretty good aftermarket support: disc brake kits, new gears and lockers

this bitch is my daily too though.. remember that.
ill figger somethin out.
getting bearings seals new u bolts this weekend.

im only assuming but i beleive my dshaft will be couple inches too long, cause the pre 93's are short pinion and 93+ is long pinion. and the 10.25 is from a 93.
the extra length of pinion wont work with my shaft i think.
so if i put in lift blocks for now to change the angle maybe itd line up with my current shaft?
i dont wanan pay a couple hundred to shorten the shaft, only to scrap it when i lift it..

i literally JUST woke up so my apologies if that rant made no sense [cheers]
