im thinking about getting an explorer to dump a 302 into. I have a couple 86 302s and im thinking i could use one for a project. Has anyone done this before? any comments, tips, or problems you ran into. I want to stick with the fuel injection. Will i be able to make my T-5 trans work in an explorer? What year of explorer would be best for this swap?

Any 4.0 liter would be a direct bolt in, wiring would be a different story though.

Depends on the year.... Ford did put 302's into Exploders.... They had cast gt-40 heads on em too.
Will the T-5 be able to hold up to a 302 with big tires, posi and a heavy foot? I think Jeep used them in CJ's so u may be able to make a dana 300 work with it.

i found a site with a bunch of different wiring diagrams so i dont think ill have too much trouble with that.

any issues anyone has seen or found doing this swap?

I had a 5.0 Ranger, it really isnt as hard as people make it out to be. If your going the carb route, its even easier. Just do your research first. Been thinking of doing it to my current Explorer as well, the 4.0 is on its last legs anyways.

For 4wd and a T5 you'd need to look into a divorced transfer case setup.

Like mentioned, 302's came stock in some explorers...

just seems like a cheap way out.carbs are'nt as good on inclines or declines and lack finesse. just my 2 cents

when did you all of a sudden become a carb expert. why dont you shut the fuck up. i just did the 5.0 swap in a explorer, adn i went back to a carb cause of the eas of install and the fact that im not running it on the road that much, mostly just on the trails [cheers]

i would say if your running as a dd stay with efi if your just going trail rig with the ocasional running on the road to get to the trail go with a carb just learn to set it up properly and there wont be any issues

he is absolutely right. If you set it up properly the floats will completely defy the laws of gravity and you will be able to drive upside down.

Demon makes a carb for off road had on on my old chevy worked great carbs arnt like they used to be alot of them have been redesighned for inclines and declines so unless you worried about that little bit of fuel mileage id go carb and make it easy on your self

No, the engine needs to match the ECU.
