Well its going to be spring soon and I've got the itch after 12 years to get my 1970 celica going again, probably not for this summer but next.

The engine is blown, the interior is 1/2 pulled out and the thing hasn't been running for years...

2.0l 18rc engine, had about 175hp.....[36]

101041

101042

shaved offf the front and rear marker lights.

Was fun as hell back in the day, used to rally against 510's and race 5.slow mustangs !!

Thinking of changing the engine to something a little more modern...

Any suggestions :dontknow:

Has supra brakes, and coils,3/4" sway bar in the rear, 1" sway bar in the front and shock tower brace..

Find your self an 18/RG for the new engine.
Had factory SUs on one of my 510s, never seen them on a Toyota though.

I have been looking for an 18rg, they are rare as hell....

18RG is old technology. If you don't want a straight 6, or anything heavy, then think about a 4AGTE. 4 cyl turbo...with a bit more boost should be over 200 hp. But you'll still be slower than mine with the 1KJZGTE. :D

Are those JDM supras 4 cylinders? They have 2.5L turbos. If those are 4 cylinders, then that could be a nice option.

Nice car by the way, I have a liking for '84 '85 supras. By the time I get around to such a project all the old toyotas will be fully oxidized.

gn turbo v6
My pops had a GN. Pretty fast for it's time, but again...it's still old tech. And heavy.
The Supras were straight 6's. The 1JZGTE I'm talking about comes in a JDM Toyota Soarer. It's a 2.5L twin turbo that replaced the engines the Supras came with. There's a 3.0L model that has the variable valve timing that give even more power, AND uses less gas.

4AGTE roughly 200 hp stock
1JZGTE 280 hp stock
2JZGTE roughly 320 hp stock
Grand National 245 hp stock

All will produce substantially more with a bit of boost play. ;)

the 4ag was available in some 4trac celicas and in the turbo mr2

I had a 91 MR2 turbo. They come with the 3SGTE. It's 200 hp stock.
I also had the non turbo MR2 with the 5SFE. It was only about 140 hp.

The turbo MR2 engine was also available in the Corolla, I think. But it's based on a front drive (or rear engine rear drive)

The 22RET or 4AGTE are probably the easiest, and cheapest.

Not from the factory. ;)

Sorry...I'm talking about the second gen MR2's.

The first gens came with the 4AG, but it wasn't turbo'd. You could get a supercharger, however.

Why not a VTEC? Or do you wanna keep it 'yota?

Cheap.. abundant.. lots of aftermarket bits and bobs.

I want a vtec in my mini =(

i dont think a front wheel drive motor will do any good in a rear wheel drive car [f]

doh - I didn't know those old celicas were RWD... damn.. that just makes it look even sweeter. I guess something out of a '87ish supra would do the trick, no?

I'd still want a honda in my classic mini though (fwd).. I could spend tons of $$ trying to squeeze horsepower out of a 1000 or 1295 rover motor, but a stock honda 4cyl puts out just as much, or more power than that. (+reliability, fuel injected and all that jazz)

I have a built 22R in mine. Pretty darned quick with the dual Webers, but these newer Jap spec motors are the ticket, as far as I'm concerned.

3rz outta the newer 4 cyl 2wd 4 runners and tacomas? good power mileage etc. bolts to a w58 with some work. classic body style. im kinda jealous with toyota envy...
