View Full Version : Machining driveshaft for bigger U joints

I couldn't find replacement U joints for my truck, so I got some that have the bearing cup ~1/16" larger than the original.
Does anyone know a machine shop that could open the "eyes" of the driveshaft to take the new U joint?

Are you not afraid of breaking a yoke if you do that?

sounds like you have a problem with finding 1330 or 1330S.

1 1/16 cap vs 1 1/8 cap..

they are all conversion joints. you will find that the yoke on the shaft is 1 1/16 and the yoke on the diff is 1 1/8.. I have 3 of these ujoints sitting at home. VERY common

Hope there is a lot of material there to maintain the strength. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do. B&J Auto Parts in Port Coquitlam has a machine shop. I have dealt with them before as have alot of other guys on the board. They do a ton of work for the local dealerships.

I wish it was that easy. I drive a Mercedes. The U joints are non replaceble. I don't want to spend 1500$ for a whole new driveshaft, so I'm looking for alternative solutions.

The original caps are ~31mm. The new caps are 32mm, or a little over 1 1/4. I had a really hard time finding a small u joint with a cap that size.
I think there is enough material to machine 1mm... I just need someone that would do it.
I'll give B&J a call on Monday.

1986 Mercedes GE280. A GD300 would be the sameand the range of years...from 1978 to 1999,2000 (I don't know for sure)
I'll need a caliper to take precise measurements, so I'll have to do that tomorrow. What dimensions should I take? Cup diameter for sure, and maybe the total size of the U joint with the caps on?

oh, I forgot to post a pic. this is how the yoke looks like...even though in this picture the guy seems he modified the driveshaft (that welding is not factory).
The U joints in the picture are the ones I want to put in...so the yokes are allready enlarged ~1mm.

I think you need a real machine shop for that not automotive
who is the guy in chilliwack people on here like, TDD or something?

I took some measurements today.
The cross dimension is 92.0mm or 3.622in (3 5/8 in.)
The original cup is 31.0 mm or 1.22in (1 57/256) :confused0006: 1 7/32 might be good enough though.

It has no clip to hold it in. They were pressed in and there were "noches" all arround to stop them from comming out. Of course I'm not looking for an identical one, just something that will work.

It might be easer to get new yokes welded on then go to all the effort to get your old ones machiened at least with new ones you can get whatever size you need insted of doing a unreliable hope it will work way :dontknow:[cheers]
