Alot more when it was welded.. but its open now n im considering chromoly.. do u guys figure its worth it for the price? or should i just stock up on the stock axels shafts.. im not real keen on puttin a d60 in right yet b/c i just pickd up the 44.. soo any suggestions [cheers]

any money you spend on it is wasted :)
chromos will last longer

depends on how you drive. what you drive.

I'm pushign about 150HP and about 5K lbs. I broke 2 stock shafts and went chromos' i broke 1 chromo. But i still havn't figured out how it broke.. wasn't on it at all. Thats on a D44

if your not even concidering a d60, then buy chromos. and if those are breaking, swap in a 4cyl with 400,000 km on it. prolly wont break much with that.

your driving habits have to match your truck. you cant go out and hammer on a truck with decent HP and TQ (V8) and 40 inch tires on half ton axles and expect shit not to break. if your throttle happy just get dana 60's. you will spend way more time fixing a 44 then you will just swap in a 60.

tack it

yup tack the u joint cap to the axle so the caps cant pop out, just dont weld it or the cap and bearings will warp

I ground my axles so that I could put full sir clips in, instead of only c-clips. I also put loctite sleeve retainer on the cap before I install the caps. I'm running 38.5x16x15 TSL'S with half ton running gear in a short box Chevy. since I've done this I have only broke one axle as to one axle a weekend before.

anything full size over 36-37 and a 60 is pretty much the only awnser. i read the yukon chromos with the superjoint take some pretty good abuse, around 700usd for the kit[cheers]

If your running 38's on a d44, the only way you can save having to do the axles every week will be to swap those to me for a set og 35" and then you might last a month os so. Or go d60.

I dont know how alot of guys have problems with a half ton axles I got a 01 Dodge ram 1500 4x4 sport with 35's on it and I do a few brake stands with it here and there and haul heavy loads and go wheeling and havnt broke a axle or u-joint yet knock on wood. Or maybe its cause its a Dodge and they are unbreakable.
