My 97 4-runner (aka the Luxo cruser) is going to need some suspension VERRY SOON.

I was thinking about a 2-3" lift, it is a 4link rear and strut front.

I would like to keep the ride nice, (no solid axle yet) because is needs to remain a good DD.

Suggestions ?? :dontknow:

Thanks.[cheers]

I did the Downey coil lift for mine, 4 inch in the rear with a 3 inch coil spacers so it sits level once your loaded with gear, limiting straps and the heavy duty coil overs in the front with the manual hub conversion kit

Yours looks good, is the ride still alright ?

My wife will be using it from time to time.

What was the cost of the package ?

The best part is the truck pretty much drives like a stock vehicle, tkae into consideration that i went to a 34 inch tire and the put in a detrit locker it obviously drives a bit different now. I will be out at harrison for the winter camping if you want to take it for a spin.

I wanted more power as well so i added a cold air intake, ceramic coated headers from downey and a cat back exhaust system. For what it is its pretty fast

I went with a Old Man Emu setup and run 32" tires on mine. Nothing exceptional, I wanted to keep the ride normal and avoid the cost of a manual hub conversion.

The wheels are mid nineties landcruiser wheels, powder coated. I still have to paint the centercaps whenever that happens.

The OME has the following part numbers: OME 881/906 N86C/N91SC

on my 98, i had fagtech CO's up front and ome heavy coils/procomp shocks out back. gave about 3" lift...nice n level since you can crank up the front a bit. you wont get/want much more than that susp wise, or youll put vc angles outta whack if you want to try to level a 4" lifted rear. it rode nice, a bit stiffer than stock. the fagtechs began to sag abit after a few years of heavy wheeling. they're non rebuildable. i ran 285s then moved up to 315s with help from a 1.5" body lift and alot of trimming and hammering.

not sure if reuben has the downey adjustable coilover kit up front or if its just lift coils n new struts. my buddy in an '00 had the downey coilover kit. adjustables up front and all dampened by some nice billies. it rode like butter...just like stock. much better than my setup but more $$ as well. i think it was about a grand + for it.

toyteclifts.com has some nice stuff. might be worth it to check them out. if i were to do it again, id go with the downey kit. and if you want power, best way is to add lower gears..

I second the OME stuff it rides great and handles the dirt just fine. tho it can be a bit pricey.

nope they are the stock ones, I did buy the copil over kit from downey and it was a bit more though. Funny thing is now I want to cranck them up a bit after getting the new winch on there but the adjustable coils are seized and they will ahve to come out before they can be crancked up.

And for those that have ridden with me it drives like a caddy on the raod super smooth and flexs real well off the pavement till you go in the water apparently.....

How much lift did you do Red ?

I have been reading a bunch of stuff on the 97 and "they" say that you can only lift it 2" because of the C/V joints.....

Is this correct ?:dontknow:

Mine is getting worse by the day...[16]

about 3 inches in the front and more like 6 in the back with the big spacer taht I put on top of the coils. I do not ahve CV issues as I spent the extra money on the manual conversion kit

That's actually not really the 4wd computer, it's the e-locker control module. I added that one when I installed my e-locker.
4WD works fine without that module. Mine was prewired for the e-locker, just had to plug that module in to make it work like factory.
I had to add the wires from the big connector by the drivers side door.

As for the steering rack, I installed the poly urethane bushings. Tightens things up a bit, although my original rubber ones were not that bad.

The poly mounts sounds like a good idea.
What's this manual conversion?

arjan
02-08-2009, 08:58 PM
Manual as in 5spd? It is a 5spd, but it came that way.

dirka dave
02-09-2009, 03:31 PM
Yes it is a 5 speed manual, drivers side drop T-case.

Apparenty standards are quite rare, when I was looking for a trans mount I was told that 1 in 200 000 were standard and that the mount was unavaible in canada and would cost about $200 !!

This is what I meant about the 'manual' conversion. ;)

redman did manual hubs. 3rd gen runners never came with them. actually, the last vehicles manual hubs came on for North American spec toyotas was the 95.5-00 (maybe up to 02?) tacomas which could be swapped into the 96-02 4runners. ORS also had a kit, but was about $1000us with warn hubs. otherwise, its all flanged with ADD. automatic disconnecting differential.

Do you have to remove the VC in he transfer case with the manual hub conversion?

d0ubledown

the 4runner is a part time 4x4. it does not have a VC in the tcase.
