why would he go to all that trouble for a nonturbo V engine? .
I think he would be better off with the inline . an e31 head and triple solex headers and cam would put out more power.

If he wanted turbo he could stick with the factory inline and go from there. you just cant beat the sound or feeling of an inline

That hood should be covering an inline six [16] .

your also gonna want to upgrade the rear if it was originally an auto car to an R200 from a stick shift if you are gonna put some power to it

Yup i have had a Z car :party0010:

what exactly is meant to be done with this car?

Our plan is to stuff the vg30de back as far as possible measuments show it will be mounted behind the front strut towers and have lots of room infront of the engine for future twin turbo.
The stock vg30de is 225 hp with some tuning and minor mods will make over 250 a 100 hp increase over stock with a better weight distribution driveability and more reliable.
I'll be reinforcing the frame rails front to back and was planning on fitting a r200 to it also my biggest concern is brakes I'm just not confident 280zxt brakes will be good enough so I'm looking for other suggestions. I do have complete 300zx brakes from the 91 donor car tho so I'm thinkin bout how to install those.
I think the VG will make more power more torque and be more reliable doing so. Pushing a L28 to 250hp and 200+ torque will make it peaky unreliable and theres no way it'll pass aircare.
This is also way better then some stupid small block install

And when hes ready for 500+hp he'll have the motor for it already installed and I get to keep the rebuilt L28 with triple SK's on it

i thought the stock v engine was only 160 HP and the tq was about the same so they were in the same ballpark as the 280 smogster.

the turbo puts out 200hp but the l28 turbo puts out about the same

seriously the L engine are very good engines . with the E31 head on a 2.8 block it gives you 11 to one add the header, cam and carbs, find an r200 with 3.9 gears or find a set of 4.3? which were rumored to come in the front of some datsun trucks? and you will have one quick car
The brakes you could probably sort something out if you spent a day on the Z board or junkyards .
If i had the internet when i had my cars i sure would have had an easy time of sourceing stuff.

I sure had a lot of fun in that 240Z i had,
it is one of only a few cars i regret selling.:(

the original VG SOHC puts out that much I'm gonna use a later one from a 91 300zx.
I like the L28 motor too thats why I'm keeping it but thats for a lighter cooler project down the road

rotarys are great but a z car is damn near 1000 pounds more then a rx only a turbo rotary would pull one around better then the original L motor

a 240z was 2301lbs and the rx7 (1st gen)was 2257 lb mazda put out 105 horse and the Z put out 161bhp.

Not much of a Z car guy but swaping in a v motor seems like your taking away from the style of the car. I'd go for a rb26dett if I had the money or one of the newer VQ motors. But thats just me, it should be cool either way. I've done my fair share of 510's but never a Z , 510's have more class:D

Hey Phil, you work in Richmond? I used to tow for Rusty's (Tonks, Boyce, Southview) Towing. Shop looks familiar.

Was checking out this thread cause my first car was 71 240Z, I loved that car! Even if it had flintstone style floorboards.

I'll try and have some more pics up for ya tommorw.
I'm doin a rear disk swap now usin 240sx disks and custom brackets It'll have functioning ebrakes. Puttinin the 300zx VLSD rear diff as well from the same 91 donor car as the rest. To do that i have to machine new companion flanges for the rear driveshafts to be usable then I'll be doin a custom main driveshaft.
What I still need and havent found yet are 280mm (11") vented rotors for the front so I can use the 4 pot 300zx front calipers. So if anyone has some ideas let me know.

Great looking Zcar, but those huge mandated bumpers, they ruined the looks of alot of cars back then. Graft on some 240 bumpers.

YES! And ditch those cheesy wheels and get somethin a little more suitable to the era of the car as well.
