Ok. The only reason i ask is a shop in town said they thought they would.

I would highly recommend not going to that shop. The only shops I know that may know what they are doing are Kyles automotive, and Truckworks.

Thanks.
I tested that by unplugging it and going for a drive and found that i dont need it.
Others on a couple other forums said my tranny wouldn't shift without it. It shifted fine with it unplugged.

then put in a c14, lots of 4:10's there.

Chevy 14 bolt?
I thought about it and still might if i get my hands on one. I have sterling semi and ff as well as a d60 ff now. And a coil and a leaf d44 to pick from for the front, would like a front 60 though.

the sterling is better diff in stock form but suffers from lack of aftermarket id go with a 14ff too and the shop u went too must have meant the entire housing or they're on crack i would not trust them

my tranny appeared to shift fine without it as well but over time you start to notice the tranny holding gears wayyyyy to long on highway and somehow gas mileage also goes to shit. vss is essential. i have 4.10 sterling pinion sitting in shed you could have for free. not sure about ring.

Doesn't the vss connected to the speedo cable control the tranny though?
I have a sterling clutch style limited slip with 4.10s from a full floater and have a bare housing but neither have the vss.
Also my rear abs has been unplugged from the little box under the dash since i got the truck. Wouldn't that do the same thing as running without it?

i guess it must have been late 91/ early 92 they switched the vss to the rear end. on my 96 the toner ring in the rear end runs the rabs and the vss. your sterling should still have the rearend sensor for the rabs though. but if you dont want abs anyway then your sterling should work just fine.

Ya my 91 has the vss in the diff and on the speedo cable.
But the sterling i have doesn't have one, must have been a mid 80's housing. I do have a semi floater sterling that has it.
Also have a 4.10 d60 rear with limited slip that i was gonna run till i get everything for the sterling ff.

d60 should work without a hitch then as long as you dont need abs. good luck!!
