I have a 94 explorer and when I push the 4 wheel drive button it doesn't light up and it doesn't engage.
Anyone have this problem before?, or have any ideas as to what the problem might be?
Thanks

My 91 is doing the same thing. I was told it's probably the 4wd module.

its probly the transfer case shift motor.
you can try giving it a few taps with a hammer or something

or try makin sure the fluid in the tcase is full because if it isnt it will not engage

what about if it doesn't shift out of 4wd is it also the shift motor?

all those probs sound like it's a shift motor issue. You might also want to try checking the switch itself.

Thanks for the help, I'll whack it a few times with a big hammer and if that doesn't work I guess I'll be replaceing it.

Dont whack it with a hammer. Check this thread, http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14

I got a 93 Explorer, and got sick of the push button crap. I converted to a manual transfer case.

Is this problem new with the ultra cold weather? I know I drive a jeep and not a ford, my 4wd wasn't engageing and a little heat on the vacuum motor and viola! Notice I said a little heat.

theres a thread somewhere around the net about replacing the part in the motor that fails. cheaper than a new one
