We went for a day trip up the Lillooet FSR in search of Keyhole Falls. We consulted the backroads map book and wound up taking a few wrong turns in our quest.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/mikewild/keyhole%20falls/IMG_2707.jpg

Nope... not down this trail

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/mikewild/keyhole%20falls/IMG_2715.jpg

It was time to turn loose the dogs in an effort to find the falls

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/mikewild/keyhole%20falls/IMG_2689.jpg

hmmm.... I think it's this way Dad

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/mikewild/keyhole%20falls/IMG_2698.jpg

The clouds were either very low, or we were very high in elevation. A clearing revealed this nice shot of the canyon below

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/mikewild/keyhole%20falls/IMG_2704.jpg

Crossing a bridge to what we thought would lead to the falls

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/mikewild/keyhole%20falls/IMG_2712.jpg

But these falls were a tad too small for what we were looking for

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/mikewild/keyhole%20falls/IMG_2711.jpg

Well we said..

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/mikewild/keyhole%20falls/IMG_2729.jpg

and kept looking

We eventually came to an impasse when we hit this bridge that was out

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/mikewild/keyhole%20falls/IMG_2752.jpg

While sitting in our trucks discussing where to try next, I heard a low rumbling sound. Not sure if it was my belly or something else, we ventured out onto the bridge to the source of the sound

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/mikewild/keyhole%20falls/IMG_2720.jpg

Well whadaya know, we found the start of the falls. It was a long way down to the river if we made a miss-step on the rickety bridge. This picture really doesn't do it justice, I give this bridge a pucker factor of about an 8 out 10

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/mikewild/keyhole%20falls/IMG_2721.jpg

Clinging precariously to a tree to look over the side of the cliff to get a good shot of the river I saw some amazing work of mother nature

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/mikewild/keyhole%20falls/IMG_2739.jpg

Looking down along the crevasse

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/mikewild/keyhole%20falls/IMG_2744.jpg

Again, hanging onto a tree for dear life to get a shot looking straight down the falls

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/mikewild/keyhole%20falls/IMG_2745.jpg

Here's a shot from the other side of the canyon where you can see where I stood at the top of the falls

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/mikewild/keyhole%20falls/800px-Keyhole_Falls.jpg

After that it was time to hit up .....

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/mikewild/keyhole%20falls/IMG_2782.jpg

I guess this is the slide area that closed the road to the springs a few years back

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/mikewild/keyhole%20falls/IMG_2756.jpg

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/mikewild/keyhole%20falls/IMG_2764.jpg

The hot springs were really nice and hot. Such a beautiful area.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y112/mikewild/keyhole%20falls/IMG_2769.jpg

I think the last time Phil was up there he left his stink everywhere and one of the pools was still closed due to health reasons :D

All in all it was a great time yesterday. It was fun to play in the snow again, I think I'm finally over the snow phobia from last December. ( No Candyce, that doesn't mean I want to go camping again for your birthday :D )

I stole that one off the internet, it was the basis of our hunt, I think that's why we had a hard time finding the place because we figured we were looking for a wide open area where the falls would reveal itself. I still gotta figure how to get to that side of things, although I think the start of the falls was a really ccol spot to find.

just 2 explorers

you guys are nuts

I know, we figured 2 exploders would be enough to pull out or tow back to the trail head any number of jeeps we may have come across! [f]

Only one tub was out, but there was lots of others that were really nice. Meager Creek is about 3-4 hours drive west of here out past Pemberton along the Lillooet FSR. You can actually take the Hurley River FSR from that way into Goldbridge, or you can loop around and come back via the Harrison West FSR.

I think it could be a health hazzard as there's really no water flow into the pool to help keep it free of stagnant water. Meager Creek is also really close to this pool and I guess if there's an increase in running water it could wash away the pool entirely. It'll be interesting to see if the pool is still there after next spring's runoff.

Yeah you guyz where right on top of Pebble/Keyhole hotsprings. Shoulda checked it out...
http://s238.photobucket.com/albums/ff317/Vancouverite1/Pebble%20Creek%20Hotsprings/

The road into Meager gets closed off(Gated), usually at the first sign of heavy snow. The gate gets closed at the Hurley/Upper Lilloett turn off. After that the only ones getting in are the snowmobiles. Snow level usually gets very deep. Snowmobiles rarely see the "GATE" just before the hotsprings as it is buried under the snow.

Was the campground being manned, taking fees, did it look like the campground was being maintained??

Did you see anybody taking fees at Meager hotsprings?

Where did the snow level start?, Snow at the campground?

Pics and Vids of Meager H/s,

Snow was only found up the Lilooet FSR about 10 k past the turnoff for the Meager Creek FSR. The booth was unmanned as was the campground before the turn off although the gates were wide open at both places. We were planning on checking out the hotsprings, but given the amount of daylight left, we decided to hit up meager creek as opposed to wandering around again trying to find pebble/keyhole springs. Seeing your pics of it makes me wish we spent a little more time looking for them, but it now gives me something to do next time we explore out that way.

Out past Pemberton. We did upwards of 500 K from Vancouver to there and back. We left N. Van at 8:45am and arrived back in town here around 9pm. Long day for sure, and next time it'll definately be a weekend of camping/exploring.

Sorry MikeWild just dawned on me you were on a day trip. The trip down to Pebble/Keyhole can be long. The slide on your butt to the hot springs takes about 1/2 an hour, coming back out takes 1 hour, give or take. In my case 1 and a half hours, real leg burner, gets your heart pumpin.
The caretaker (Mac) was found dead in his trailer the week after I left in Sept/08. He was a nice guy, reminded me of Lester up Harrison East.

I recommend going there its a nice place but watch for the water level at heyhole/pebble creek hot spring as when the water is high it is dangerous as the hot springs are pretty much at river level there. The snow pack midway through winter is impassable to the springs so if your going be prepared.

Here are some pics the area and the slide.
