View Full Version : runner airbox elimination

under the hood of the 1990 runner, the intake is such a "complex" contraption and i'd like to eliminate most of it. I want the silencer portion removed, and the airbox itself. I am going to run a MAF adapter for a cone filter, but what do I do with the 2 or 3 vacuum lines that i'd pull off the box. Just plug them or do they need to be re-routed

K&N make one for it but I am not sure what they do with the vacuum lines. I'm guessing this is the 3.0L, my buddy had it on his 3.0L so i can try to find out from him.[cheers]

I spend a dew fours searching last night and didnt come up with much. Pictures on ebay gave me the best idea of what to do. The air hoses are routed back into the intake, between the tb and maf so this gives me a general idea of where to put them or just ebay the whole intake system but it dosnt help much for water crossings.

I basicly have the same setup on my 97' 4Runner with the 3.4l.
It sounds like I have a turbo when I wind it up...

ISR mod. Cost me about 20 bucks.
10 dollars for 3" exhaust pipe with a 46 degree bend in the middle.
and a few bucks for 3" rubber sleeves for clamps and some brass fittings.
You baisily remove the intake from the TB to the airbox, including the silencer that bolts to the bottom of the airbox. You attach the hose comming from the valve cover onto your new intake, aswell as re-routing the hose that used to go to the silencer, to your intake.
Here is a picture of mine for refrence.
p.s Keep your airbox! The factory setup is actually not that bad, it ducts air in from around the drivers side headlight. Almost like a "ram air" system. Going to an open filter style intake is stupid, unless you got a good ram air intake shoving cool in into the engine bay, you will suck up hot engine bay air...
