I am thinking about trading in my car for a 3rd Gen 4runner, '99 to be exact. I must admit that i dont know much about them other than the newish 3.4L. I also heard that some of the models come with an electric locking rear diff.

I am leaning toward the 4runner cuz, well i really really miss my old '95 xtra cab, but the fiance is talking kids in future so i don't wanna go thru the loss of another truck just because there is no room for a car seat.

I am not a hardcore wheeler, more just an explorer who doesn't want to get stuck, so no SAS will ever be done, maybe just a 4" lift and some nice MT's.

My questions are to the people that have one or know someone who does, how do they like it on the trails? Anything special to look out for when buying one (when does the timing chain need to be done, or other expensive maintenance)? Whats the first things you would do to make it better on the trail?

I have a 97 5speed 3.4l with E-locker...It has 250.000 on it and runs like a top.:) (it also has leather):p

We paied $13 000 4 years ago and have put a clutch in it thats about all.

It rides on bfg allterrains and does quite well. It also has a tape deck/cd combo in it.[36]

i had a 98 limited with the elocker. i wheeled it quite hard..it performed awesome...hauled the kids + gear to camp etc, and still got me to work monday mornin..

you wont get 4" lift out of em without at least an inch of that being body lift...unless you get a drop bracket lift..but those are gay. i had about 2.75~3" of susp lift, and 1.5" body lift with 35" MT/R, front arb locker, sliders..etc etc.

let me know if ya have any questions about em...they truly are the best dd/wheeler/kid hauler you can get. find one elocker equipped, and you're half way there...

Was the e-locker an option on the other models, like the SR5 or was it just on the LTD models?

I would love to get new, but thats just not in the budget. There is also the girl factor.... the one that limits the vehicals you can buy based on looks. If the girl doesn't like it, you can't buy.

elocker was an option across the board. from base model 4banger auto's to SR5's...to the ltds.
