84 frame and axles, 86 cab, 87 box, 83 motor, 4 inch lift, custom beefy bumpers. Rust free but still more work and money to make it the way i'd like it. once its done and drivable it'll get 34 10.5 ltbs, high steer and an elocker, and hopefully sooner than later go duals. Should flex a little more once the motors in and a little bit more wieght from the rear bumper

new project.

someone elses junk.
needed motor mounts, shocks, brakes and an awake from the dead.
got it all done, now more work is needed.

would like to put duals in but for money issues might just do t-case gears, needs some tubing also.

for now it gets around fine.

Not sure if this can be considered a Toyota, but it IS more Toyota than Suzuki. Started life as a 85 Samurai LWB. Chopped the back of the body off, stretched the wheelbase to 100", now it's more 4Runner than anything. Soon to be finished......

Toyota 22R for now. Getting the 22RE rebuilt. W56 tranny. Toy axles. Flat belly. Toy rear leafs up front, Chevy 63" springs out back.

Rear suspension set up is as follows: 63 inch Chevy 2wd rear leaf springs, new mains plus added a small leaf and rebowed the springs a little, Toyota/Chevy shackle set up.

Front suspension set up is as follows:Pro comp 4 inch front lift springs poly bushings with a custom 1 inch shackle lift.

A Pro Comp drop drag link, AllPro knuckle rebuild kit FJ 40 vented rotors and IFS calipers were installed.Trail Gear 1.5 inch front wheel spacers to make up for the 3 inch wider rear end.

I installed a rear axle from an 88 4runner and a Trail Gear rear U bolt flip kit, also Lincoln locked the rear 3rd member.

I installed extended brake hoses on the front (Nissan 300zx) and a steelbraided rear flex hose 26 inches long. Also made up extended diff breather hoses front and rear.

A TRD cone air filter and a custon made adapator for the air flow sensor to eliminate the stock air box.

The motor gearbox and transfer case were swapped from an 88 4runner this truck was an automatic.

The Gas tank is mounted between the frame rails above the rear drive shaft.Custom Dove Tail flat deck.

The frame is replated on four sides and bobbed off at the shackle hangers approx 12 inches. The truck is painted olive drab.Toyota celica bucket seats were installed.Tires 34/10.5/15 Super Swamper bias ply LTB'S .

(Future mods) Custom front bumper, hy steer, 529 or 488 gears undecided and an exhaust header and maybe 37 inch Swampers.

why would you take the box off, it doesnt look bad

redneck
09-07-2008, 09:25 PM
that was a "toy box" fiberglass box made in onterrible in the late 80's, it used 3/4" plywood for internal structure, and the plywood was rotted out, but it held together ok, so I kept it at first, decided to buy into the hype and switch to synthetic motor oil in all my vehicles, and all my motors siezed in less than 500km's:(. for those who care...that was two VW 1.8's, and the 22R in this truck. I did the dub motors myself, with help from a buddy who's a wolfsburg certified VW specialist, and I traded the box to a guy to put in a new motor, do my clutch, and clean up all the wiring for me.
So yeah.
That's why I took the box off.

Here's a story and a half for you folks. Been talking about buying a toyota for a while, when a guy from my shop said a friend of a friend was selling a '90 4runner. Checked it out and decided, "what the hell? What could possibly go wrong?". Well...

Had to rescue this one from the wrecker; She barely ran at all when I got it. Eventually found the problem: Timing belt had skipped and buddy I got it from just moved the distributor a tooth over [16]. So I tore her down, rad was pretty rotten so I changed that, got the timing cover off, and the key holding the crank gear for the timing belt had sheared and was holding by rust and grit and horseshoes!!!
So, did the water pump while I was in there, changed the belt, gear and key, got her together and the starter wouldn't turn... time for some more hunting. Took me a while to find the starter relay, got it running.
OK, time for some wheeling, right? No such luck. I guess the guy had been running with a retarded engine for a while, slipping the shit outta the clutch and getting it good and hot... Guess what went SIX DAYS after the engine actually started putting out some push power...? :confused0006:
After fixing countless electrical problems in her, its almost a respectable unit for the time being... Unfortunately, a certain highway cop didn't think so, pulled me over and gave me an inspection notice. Why? NO MUDFLAPS on the truck! What a joke! I'm just lucky I work at a truck shop, the boys are giving me some slack. Still gotta replace my cracked windshield and mount some fender flares to pass inspection, so it's still at the shop until I can get some more money to put into it.

Here's a pic of the yoda more or less as it is now:

Still need to take care of a bunch of fender rust, replace the ifs with a solid axle, rear leaf springs, rear dif locker is in the mail, and of course putting slider bars and a winch on is a must down the road. Oh yeah, 37 or 38 for tires coming on after axle swap too [36]!!!!

In the meantime, gonna run my buddy's jeep into the ground so he can pay me to fix it, so I can spend more on my truck in turn [cheers]. That's probably the most reliable thing about jeeps - mechanics see you coming a mile away. [15]

Thanks, dude. Been browsing through the forum, you've got some sweet rides yourself. "work in progress" pretty much sums up this unit. I forgot one more thing I gotta do before I hit the trail:
Does anyone happen to have a 7.5" 4.88 ring gear kicking around? Gotta get a new gear set for it, figured I'd rather buy used since that axle isn't staying in there much longer anyway... Thanks!

Not so bad ,mainly because engine and interior was all out, so very light.I bet the trailer weighs more than the car at that point. We have a 99 Durango with the 5.9L that is our main towing rig.I wanted to pick up the Supra with the 4Runner, otherwise it was brought down from Mt Currie with the Durango.

Here's my rig. Its our dd so trying to keep it in good shape. Had it over a year now. Bought stock with 175k. Mod list never ends, but i'm finding its a lot of fun to do the research and build a truck for my needs. Looking forward to doing some longer trails like whipsaw this summer. For now stave will have to do.

And thanks too ,Dave. Having the 89 Turbo motor in there, I wanted a bit of the red from that year on the car.

I did get to take it on the road for few days a couple weeks ago, and HOLY HOLY, hang on baby. You want crisp, clean torque with quick spool, I got it!

Haha that's just because the exhaust has rusted off again. Now it just dumps out of a delta 40 under the bed. Won't see it around too much, will be parked once I relocate and start the tear down.

Sorry guys , I tried to post several pics of my project to come up with the fj in the previous post. It didn't work:dontknow: I ended up cutting off the tub and cutting out and rewelding all new steel in to rebuild what 40 yrs of corrosion does to all old Toyota's

My pzj when I picked it up in Stewart, BC. Since then i replaced left rear leaf pack and rebuilt the front diff with all new bearings seals and even a birfield. I guess the previous owner figured that when the front wheel is about to fall off from a blown inner and outter spindle bearings and the 4wd mysteriously stops working you just ignore it and figure it will fix itself. And got it running .http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x404/bigneily/060.jpg (http://s1180.photobucket.com/user/bigneily/media/060.jpg.html)

They still come in to canada, I drove a brand new one off the ship a few months ago , still look like the 80's style land cruisers , factory flatbed logger style box, factory front and rear lockers plus dual transfer cases and come stock on 35 inch skinny style mud tires , struck mine vehicles not to sale to the public , apperinitly the mine company's have a can tract with toyota and when there dead ready for scrapping they get trucked back to the docks and are shipped back to japan

The truck you describe would be sick to have, My half witted brother bought this gem:D from a mine near dease lake for 500 bucks, It came with a shit load of spare parts. A complete 3b diesel engine , Two r141 trannys with transfer cases a truck load of leaf packs. Two diffs a front and a rear both high pinion with 4.56,s and a box full of factory Toyota bearings and seals u joints a clutch. I picked up the truck and almost everything described above for 400 bucks. I plan on replacing the doors and fenders giving it a bed liner paint job and using it as a hunting truck the pz's were supposed to be good on fuel, A little more economical than my 350 in the 40.
