Just recently, yesterday, I picked up a new for me 1980 Dodge Power Wagon. This is the model with the Step side box, 360, and 4spd auto trans. Since im pretty new to the full-size truck market, and especial Dodge, i was just wondering what i should look out for.

I already know it has a leaky heater core and wheel cylinder that need to be replaced, the original dash guages are toast too with the exception of the speedo and semi functioning fuel guage.

One thing i did notice was it didn't want to shift into 4th gear. I drove almost the entire way from Chilliwack to Mission in 3rd. I took the parallel roads so i didn't have to push it to hard. This might just be due to the fact that it was sitting for 2 years. Another was the brake pedal had to be pressed almost to the floor before we started to slow down. Now this could be have been due to the leaky wheel cylinder and the 2 years of sitting, but any recomendations on what to check out would be appreciated.

I'm having serious issues with the engine electrical system after replacing the alt , blowing fusible links mostly.

I would definatly suggest cutting out all the fusible links (Wire type) and replacing them with spade-style fuse holders.

Funny you mention that. Appearantly the people that had the truck before me tried to install an amp. They must have thought the ground cable was optional since the fuse box is pretty melty lookin. There are a few things that dont work anymore, like the heater blower motor (currently rigged with a toggle switch).

I do have a new dash wiring harness, but i haven't looked into what all is involved.

My blower motor works on HI only

I'm on Voltage regulator #3

Melty melty some wires from the alternator to the firewall connector to the main loom when Voltage regulator #2 kicked the bucket

Melted the fusible links for the Alternator->Battery and Battery->Ignition when voltage regulator #2 kicked it.

Broke off the battery box (She don't like being airborn)

Set carburator on fire (My bad)

Otherwise my dodge is SOLID. Engine runs like a top with 326 thousand on it, tranny shifts as smoothly as you can expect from a NP435, and both axles have yet to be broken.

Someone butchered the wiring. It also had cruise control at some point.

Talk to Robo on here about your tranny, he's the auto-tranny expert! Probably just needs more fluid or something simple.

The tranny is actually working good now. I guess it just needed some attention after sitting for so long.
