Well I finally got around to starting on my lift. My Runner is getting 4 inches of lift and 35`s. Laugh all you want I am only doing an IFS lift. This just might be the first IFS lift thread that has been started, I know I know SAS is where it`s at. Well for those of you that don`t know I am going to be a Daddy in Nov. and the SAS kit and extras was too much. I went IFS for a few reasons, top 2 being cost and the fact I can do it myself.

Here are a few pics of the kit and the parts I rebuilt and cleaned to replace my old front end. I will post more pics as I get time. I did most of this work during the week and I started the lift Sunday morning. So far so good but between the truck being 19 years old and the kit not fitting it`s been a long first day.

Yeah I was thinking that too - if you spent as much time laying down cardboard and setting up the display as you did installing shit you'd be DONE! haha Looks good dude! IFS isn't that bad..just save up for a rear locker and you'll be minty.

..Also..I only see a couple shackles for your rear end - they don't look long enough for a 4.5 inch lift by themselves..at most 1 or 2 inches.. got blocks hiding somewhere? New leafs?

ok so now I have a had a night to sleep I can post the rest of the pics. I know I could have whipped this off in a day at work if I just wanted to put the lift in. That's not really me though. While I had it apart I wanted to fix and replace alot of things and paint alot of the frame areas I couldn't get at later. I like to do things right if I can so I spent alot of extra time. I was also doing this at home and I live in a townhouse complex. This meant having to shut it down around ten each night as the impact and hammering gets a bit loud. As I set my plan to have it drivable by Tuesday to get to work. Well down to the minute I got it done. I worked all night Monday and as it got late I went to hand tools only. Thats right I reassembled the whole front end by hand:dontknow: It worked for our fore fathers why not me.

It slowed me down a abit but I still made my deadline. I bled the brakes at 5:45am and put the tires back on for a test drive. Drove like shit but I was so tired I didn't give it enough thought. I went to work and slept for half an hour out front. When I got a chance I put it on the hoist and had a look see:confused0006: hmmmmmm them tires don't look right. Can you say alignment needed. Gave it some ajusting myself, and got it straight enough to wait until I get my new tires on for an alignment.

I put alot of work into and I still have a few loose ends to tie up but so far so good.

I only have the same travel in the front the rear has a bit more flex now. The straps are 95% show and 5% just incase the shocke were to rip out I guess. Thats about the only way the coils could pop.

And I have the tires I am just waiting on my rims. Then I will be coming over there to mount them[36]

Ok time to show everyone where I have been hiding for the last 2 months.

It has taken me a while but I did 98% of this work myself and it took many late nights and alot of learning to complete. I thank everyone that helped with advice and ideas and really couldnt have done it without you.

I will start right from the begining for those that didnt catch the facebook updates.

The first week was alot of cleaning old parts and stripping the housing.
169680
169681
169682
169684
169685

I even got a free pop bottle lid with the housing
169683

Lucky for me on this project I got to use the shop at work.
169686
169687
169688

After all the grinding and wire brushing I still ended up taking it and sandblasting it all
169689

Word of advice after sand blasting dont leave your parts where they can get rained on.

I saw a trick on a few toyota forums when I was researching for this project and decided to give the JB weld trick a try. After polishing as much of the pitting off the knuckle balls as I could, I added a thin layer of JB weld and sanded it to a smooth finish.
169702
169703

Time to get it all started
169704
169705

Knuckles built
169706

Once I got it together I found that the creeper gussets were binding on the knuckle seals.
169707
169708

I had to grind and smooth down the gussets to get it all running smooth.

Time for the newly rebuilt 5:29's and ARB to be sealed and bolted on.
169709
169710

Axles in and ready for the outers
169711
169712

Almost done

No that took a week and a half, the whole project took a couple of months but seeing as I did it all myself and most of it was done between 10pm and 3am it made for some long nights if I need parts or tools I didn't have.

And yes Nic there is probably and extra week or two added for paint. Better to do it right the first time.

It really needs bumpers and tow/recovery points now though. Being stuck at Robos without anywhere to hook up properly sucked.

Pick up a pick up housing to work with, it saves so much time in the prep as it has half the stuff to cut off to get it ready for the leafs[cheers]

Looks like I will have to start over on the swap photos. Seems like they got screwed up. Oh well, I haven't gotten around to it because I have been to busy wheeling, breaking it then fixing it ect.

Latest updates are a complete rebuild of the front end( yes it's only been 5 months) front and rear air lockers this time, bumpers and sliders and tube work over the fenders and a new front driveshaft.

Thanks To everyone that helped to get me ready and back out again ........soon

Well I have started to update the build photo's. I will keep on getting the rest of the photo's up and show where the truck is at after a year and a half of "testing" The before and afters should be good.

And Nik, it does have a "few" more dents in it now[cheers]

Next it was time to mount the front shocks and finish up the bumpstops ect.

I made some jigs to test for shock mount location.

So once the front was done it was pretty obvious the rear suspension would need something too. With the 4" coil lift sagging bad and most of the link mounts being ripped out at one time or another over 4 years it was time to fix it and bring it up to the height to match the front.

After all the extra money that went into the front project it was out of my budget to do a three or four link on coil overs as much as I wanted too. I decided to go with a leaf conversion kit to make it quick and easy....... yeah right.

More new parts, funtimes:D
169732

169733

Picked up a pick up rear housing from Pegleg to make the prep far easier. (the housing in my Runner had way too many brackets and gussetts to cut off)

Truck housing
169734

My housing......... you see why I went with a leaf set up housing to start
169738

Time to strip the old perches and brackets

169735

169736

169737

Ready to start putting the new stuff on it

169739

169740

Considering that I learned to weld doing the front part of the project I think I'm doing ok.

169741

And of course the manditory blasting of the black paint.

Setting up the rear shocks and making the new upper shock mount

169753

These aren't just bolts laying on top of the steel, they are actual shock mount bolts that go through and are welded on the other side too
169754

169755

Time to cycle through the suspension and see if everything clears

With everything in and the gas tank still out it was a good time to repaint everything underneath that I could. As some may know toyotas are known to rust........:dontknow: mine wasnt too bad but I still took the time to give it a nice new blast of paint for the frame and undercoat for the floor.

At first I thought it was just the axle and birf that blew up but it turned out to be the locker and ring and pinion too.

So it was time to upgrade. I really didnt want to have to go through all that again.

Dirty 30 front shafts and birfs and new Yukon air lockers front and back should help.

ah..... good times.

I hammered it through one more rock pile after the boom then I decided to take the front shaft out and drive it in low range. It was a cake walk after that. Now with the way it's set up I can do that without having to take the shaft out. And with more gearing options. (Still more pictures to come of that )

Like the " kind of narrow" creek crossing?

Jamie: "well its kind of narrow"

Kris: "oh that's not narrow, Greg doesn't really care about that"

And then it was on to finding out what narrow really meant. And so was found "Hour Glass"
