why?????

Kinslayer
05-29-2008, 03:55 PM
why?????

I'm talking about the TJ rubicon (the original rubicon).. They arn't that well insulated, have trouble keeping up with other 'SUV's on the highway.. and with the BFG MTR's stock they are a fairly noisy tire for an OEM tire...

.....All of which I personally don't give two shits about.

It depends on the application. If cost is not an issue then I would look at a dodge power wagon. Front and rear lockers, electronic sway bar disconnect. Stock hidden front winch 4.37 stock gears.

Very sweet trcuk but they stopped production I thin in 2001.

So I thinnk the jeep is very capable, but I would alays rather have a toyota Crusier as the handle better have more power and also have a lot of aftermarket options at this point.

But most importantly what will the vehicle be used for? The FJ Cruiser comes stock with 4.10 gears and a rear locker AC and a very nice ride and look.

05-29-2008, 06:29 PM
Pound for pound I gotta go with the Rubi too. I am looking at replacing the XJ in the next year or two and after scouting around and looking hard at my options including the FJ, the Rubi gives me the best options before modifying it.

That being said, I am looking specifically at "out of the box" wheelers that are small enough for tight trails and offer a decent break-over angle without lifting it.

Like an earlier post, I couldn't care less about road manners. I can live with mediocre performance on road if it gets me to my fishing holes and back.

You are right, The new Jeep Compass and the other one they want to call a Jeep are just cars with bigger cabs.

The Rubicon is a JEEP. It has a Frame. It has D44 axles, lockers, 4.1:1 diffs, 4:1 tcase..they designed it to go wheeling.

Personally i'll never own a toyota just because it seems like everyone who owns a toyota thinks they are king shit and they drive invincible peices of gold...and It makes me smile to prove them wrong.

but there is more to take into consideration, things like comfort, feel of the vehicle on and off the road. Strength of the engine, reliability, looks and many more factors.

You already indicated that its to go from a to b with some mild camping and whjeeling. Why give up comfort and style just to have one or two more 4x4 realted toys that will maybe used 1% of the time, when other vehicle are capable enough for what yer looking to use the truck for

Exactly..the Rubi has a 4L, which as we all know is a bullet proof unit if taken care of, but with the 4:1 tcase and 4.1:1 gears it's sluggish on the highway. Those 4L's don't like to rev high (because they don't need to)..

B any idea how much reduction a jeep 4:1 case gets in high range vs a stock 2.8:1 case? I guess tire size is a factor too in the end overall speed...

im assuming youre only referring to vehicles that were available in canada, as there are a whole world of rigs out there that are very well equipped stock, that we can/will never ever get our mits on. landy's...70 series toyotas..etc.

i'll join the club and bite my tongue when i say things like the rubi & hummers win, only since they offer these specifications that you say makes a vehicle "the best". best is very subjective. just because they offer these parts, doesnt necessarily make them the best. 'most well equipped' 4X4 probably would be a better title. alot of a vehicles capabilities rests on the person behind the wheel.

not new: i'll definitely have to say an FZJ80. fr/rr lockers, low range, 1 ton running gear, full time 4WD, leather, AC, seats 7, coil springs & much more, made this the ultimate off roader...years before the rubi's showed up.

the fj cruisers are excellent in stock form. its so good, even a girl can take a stocker up hells gate (http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=257464209667677086&q=miss+fj&ei=LbJASMjuL43CqAOqkLiGCQ) in moab.

personally i think all of the new vehicles are mostly, same scrap different country. I have to say that the Jeep Rubicon has to be the best 4x4SUV out there with flex-4.10s-dana44s-F/R lockers-sway bar disconnect-32s-low gearing in the TC.
As for the 3.8 not being tested, a friend on mine works for dodge and says there a great motor and haven't had any problems with them.
second place would go the to FJ cruiser just cause I'm a Toyota guy ;)
3rd (i know I'll get flamed for it) is the H3 with V8 power-4.10s-same TC gearing as the Rubicon-rear locker.

As for pickups the dodge power wagon kicks ass period. 5.7 hemi-4.56s-F/R lockers-SBD-factory installed winch.

only down side to all these factory rigs that I know the PW and Rubicon can only use the lockers in low range and I think the rest are the same. Oh and the SBD motor if needing replacing is $3000 from the dealership. I know that cause we burned out the one in my buddies power wagon.

yeah that just proves the masses of idiots willin to buy crap cus of a good price 88 million of those 100 million are broken down shit

Motors are usually ok, it's generally the trannies that die in those things because they arn't designed for what people do to them.. They put a nice beefy motor in a van so people throw on trailer hitches and whatnot not realizing it's a wimpy tranny that's gonna 'splode

Well yeah I know lots of those vans are fucked..but not lots of them come with 3.8s.. anything before...say..98ish didn't have it as an option, was the 2.8, 3.0 and 3.3. Don't know the exact years but y'know. I've never seen one with the newer body style that is smoking.

This is an odd thread for this site. Who in their right mind on this site would take a brand new $30,000 vehicle and bash it around out on the "trail".

Some city slicker rich kid might be moronic enough.

Shit even my old runner made me squirm with every screech or crunch.
