I am fairly new to this site for posting but been a member for awhile(never had anything to post about lol)

I have started my swap this weekend with finding a rust free one owner 89 xlt Bronco paid $400, everything works even the key for the back window (first one I havent had to fix)

I am putting in a 7.3 idi diesel out of my 87 f250 4x4 with standard 5spd tranny I have also picked up a set of axles out of 2001 f350, I know some would say the axles are crap but for $400 bucks for the pair and I get rear disk brakes out of it too I couldnt pass them up. and the unit bearings are only gonna cost me 140 each and I will claim warranty on them before the year is up through my shop
The Time has finally come the stars are aligned

Project: Diesel Beast

Donor: 1987 F250 xcab 4x4 7.3L 5spd standard

The Beast: 1989 Bronco XLT

The Plan: A complete 7.3L diesel swap
one ton diffs from a 2001 sas leaf spring
4" lift springs and 4" shackle flip and reversal
total 8"or so of suspension lift 2" body lift for
clearance.

dual side exit 3" exhaust and within a year a
ats turbo system

Sunday April 28
I am sure there will be more bits and pieces as time goes on
I will updating with pics as often as I can and I will only have weekends to work on the trucks so it may take me awhile to getter done

Got started Sunday on the tear down of the bronco
got grill and head lamp asemblys lower skirt removed
rad and ac condensor out and rad suport and then the
dam rain started
I am bringing home the engine hoist tommorow to pull the engine and tranny
and am hoping to have it all torn apart by the weekend

Mon April 30
got a little more done last night pulled the wirring harness from the bronco engine is completly unhooked and unbolted just have to bring home the hoist and pull it

Fri may2
got the engine and tranny pulled came out alot easier thatn I thought it was going too

Sun may 4
So yestrerday I drove round trip 866km (not miles eh!) vancouver to kelowna to pick up some one ton axles the guy thought they where from a 2001 superduty and that would have made it a dana 50 front well when I got home and ran the numbers on the diff and it is in fact a dana 60 front and rear all for 400 bucks.. all they really need is pinion seals ball joints and those outer hubs even the unit bearings look to be in good shape still. Now I need the parts to hang them on the bronco

oh and today I got the diesel torn apart and ready for engine removal
got the pedal asymbly pulled wirring harness and intereior pieces dash and such pulled as well here are some more pics

wed may 7
progress update I have the diesel now sitting in the bronco still have to move the tranny crossmemeber back one inch (holes already there in the frome) and tighten it all down
got the fuel lines run it is basicaly just a matter of hooking it all back up and doing some wiring

PICS!!!

I guess its time for an update

I have done the solid axle swap using 2001 superduty axles dana 50 front and a sterling 10.5 rear with disk brakes I got about 8" lift now and running 36" buck shots

I am currently remaking my shackle hangers with some beefer steel.
I found had to much flex with the ones I had and made for some mad death wobble

so that is your bronco at cloverdale service...

i saw it the other day and thought oh typical lifted ttb bronco and looked twice and saw the solid axle and knew something was going on!

I've known a couple d60 ford swaps to get the death wobble. Solved by a track bar. I hate em as much as the next guy, but works nice. One other thing, check your camber angle, unless you've turned the "c"s it looks like it might be too much. Otherwise nice looking bronco.

One thought, don't know if it's in your plan, but go with a highsteer setup and loose the "Y" steering.

it is a leaf srping so there are no C's and I think you ment caster as camber is the in and out of top and bottom of the tire

but ya I may have to check that caster anyway as I am running a longer shackle (after looking at a truck with the same axle though the pinion sit's dam near flat)

oh and no y steering if you look at the pics in front of my shop I have the factory f350 steering arms on there

Once I have enough money again I may buy the high steer knuckle and arms

Troy

it is a leaf srping so there are no C's

by C's he means the inner knuckle welded on the axle housing, its common to cut the welds and rotate the inner knuckles to get the desired pinion angle while keeping proper caster angle

and I think you ment caster as camber is the in and out of top and bottom of the tire
if the axle is tilted forward to much it causes bad wobble, by adjusting the caster back, it will smooth things out and wont be so touchy and will turn better as the front tires wont be 'digging' or cutting into the corner

Reaper

caster angle is the same on the truck now as the factory had set it

Reaper
08-16-2008, 02:50 PM
well I have rebuilt the shackle hangers and did an eyellighnment
went for a road test hit the same street I got the death wobble on and it didnt wobble me to death

lol so seems all good for now

I know how you feel it was a race to the finish! mine was together may 16th the powerstroke was a natural swap for the bronco like dropping a 5l into a miata. too bad ford didn't go there. I can understand why though... the "Broncosaurus Wrexxx" weighs in @ a chubby 7000lbs. I'd bee interested to see what you have done with yours.

the engine swap was the easy part lol
it was the one ton axles that gave the me the most trouble

feel free to stop in next time your in cloverdale

'cept I just cut the 1 ton frame in the middle and put it back together about 40 inches shorter everything is still in it's stock configuration.
