Figured i'd start a build up thread.
84 single cab long box is what i started off with. that cost 500 bucks
Took off the propane, got a rust free box and tailgate for it (only 250 bucks all together[36] ) beefed up the bumpers cut and fixed the whole in the floor, patched the frame. Gave it a 4 inch lift corrected the steering. And then the fun begins i bought a rust free 87 cab with all interior parts and sliding rear window sun roof and good windshiled with clean vins for 150[36] . I bought the cab to use the vins and grey interior parts but decided to rhyno line the inside and swap cabs. I also went and bought a running motor that had been rebuilt and cammed wiht hedmen headers with tranny and t case for 400 bucks. The motor right now is getting a new timeing chain. And i'm stuck on what colour to paint it.

nice pics....... good luck witht he frame, it dont look like its gonna last long.

how do you figure? i patched the only soft spot on the whole frame inside and out. and the large gash is from cutting off the bed mount wiht a plasma all it was the little rust hole.

Toyquad

cause once a toy frame starts to rust......

my frame looks better then that...... and every couple months its getting patched...... even where it lookes solid, it will start to crack.

Little more. now i'm onto putting in the dash and hooking everything up. then do the oil pan gasket on the new motor and drop it it. some of a the wiring was melted and fucked so i replaced it and will have to check everything over before i button up the interior. i've also got to find new linkage for the cold control as it broke. anyone have one lying around or have any ideas? Another question. now that the new cab is mounted the shifter hole doesn't line up its off by a couple inches. I thought there were no changes to the body for second gens. Can anyone tell me why the shifter hole is off?

GOT MUD

the hole is in the wrong spot because they changed the tranny in 86 i think to a longer one, or was it 84 i can't remember, what year is the cab and frame?

Kinslayer
06-12-2008, 09:38 PM
Looks good mang, what a shit load of work though!

PS, when you are patching frames you want to fishplate it, thataway when it flexes it can distribute the load over a longer section of frame instead of one sharp edge... think about how a leaf spring pack works..

actually now that i took a good look at the pic it refreshed my memory, that is why, they made the tranny longer in 86 so your hole is farther back in the cab, looks like your gonna have to upgrade your tranny to a newer style, if thats what you do get an 87 they are supposed to have an indistructable t-case

theres no difference in lengther bettween the two trannys. the shorter tranny for toyotas is 79 83. so i shouldn't have a problem. and the most i'll have to cut a bit out of the tunnel

the reason the holes are in a different spot is, even though the tranny's are the same length, some are equipped with forward shifting t cases(g52&g54 & some w56's )and others had top shift (w56). That will move the holes for the shifters around.

G52&g54 tranny's came in 84 and 85 , mostly on carb'd motors
W56 came on fuel injected motors, they also had fwd shift variations of this tranny.

check out marlincrawler's web site if ya need more info

Yea i was shown the marlin crawler website. and learnt that they were the same length. whats the difference like set up between a forward shit and top shift? Thanks for clearing up the difference part. I knew it would work if i cut it out, just wanted to know why it was different[h]

thats awesome that you got it figured out, i could of swore that the tranny's were different length because i blew the tranny in mine a few years back and i got a used one and it was longer and had to shorten my rear shaft and lengthen the front one, so sorry to make ya get all freaked out thinkin you had to spend more cash, it is much easier to just cut the floor after all if you got to

It's just 4 inch leafs no body lift. And I've got 5 inch tg front shackles. The highsteer is tg high steer. Ill have to measure it fits into myshed. But it's damn close.

sweet. i have some big front springs i was given with teh truck wheni bought it. not a clue how big, but about 4" im pretty sure. already has slightly bigger shackles.
i just need rear leafs, high steer (already have the IFS box, came with the truck too) and shocks
and then money for bigger tires and gears. haha will be a long time away cause im working for pennies and have student loans and a visa to pay off
but your truck is a huge inspiration to work on mine and get it as nice as yours.

measure the length of rear leafs you need. these ones don;t work. i know what you mean this trucks been built on the fairly cheap side, id go duals instead of gears to its what the kool kids do:D means alot has takin way to long but i've been told thats how first builds go:dontknow:

im thinking im going to try the 63" chevys for the rear. im a welder, so it should be pretty stright forward. if i need a nother inch of two ill get or make lift blocks.
the thing with duals is its my daily driver. do most people run in low range on the one case on the street? i have a set of '83 axles at my parents house that are is pretty rough shape, but im thinking i could rebuild those thirds and take my time to do it right and then it would be a real easy swap. keep the axle shafts if they are still decent (the outers on the front might be pretty rusty) and see what i can get for the housings.

thats my temporary plan any way.
the money thing is the only thing in my way. and its going to be a while.

other concern is the overall height. im origenaly from vancouver island and id like to be able to go back every now and then without paying an extra $30 each way for over height. haha if its close ill airdown before i go though teh ticket booth

Are you deliberately trying to hurt my feelings, where's your compassion man?
I may be spending a lot of time getting rid of the rust but most of the dents are stayin.
It's changing from the red that really eats up the time.

no more lift height is perfect. trucks built more for trails and rocks. As for paint its getting painted gun metal grey with rhino lined box

the tires are not going to rub your box or fenders ? i would hate to mess up all that body work ... its a nice truck! if not sweet i always like the low profile look with big tires [36]
