Has anyone taken the trail down the backside of campbell that looks to lead to the valley between there and carmi?
Was there today but stopped part way down under the powerlines. It was pretty muddy and slick lotsa run off starting. Wasn't sure where it went or if there was a way out at the bottom. It was a bit of a chore just climbing back up from where i was.

it just goes all over the back of the mountian. There is a motorcross track back there and a few savage trails up to the top but thats pretty much it.... the back of the mountain drops of into a canyon

ManDown
02-18-2008, 08:58 PM
be carefull back there as there are some really deap washouts. Try and stay away from the powerlines the rest should be stock friendly

C.W.
02-18-2008, 09:00 PM
Is it a straight drop or can you drive down there on the backside? Is there any way out of the canyon if you get down there?
Also , what about the fenced area wit the no trespassing signs that are all broken? The gates were all open and looked like there was quite a bit of traffic through them.

Lol i started to notice the washouts, i stopped right under the power lines and turned back. It was pretty soft and narrow there already.

i wouldnt try man im pretty sure its a rock face cliff type deal.... ive never actually walked far enough to see but i know its very steep and theres a creek at the bottom that goes to the penticton reservoir.... as for the fence.... im not sure what its about but my whole life ive never had any problems back there theres dirtbike trails and mountain bike trails that will take you right down to the mcnicoll area and alot of dirtbike jumps back there and a sweet trail that will take you to the top of the mountain

C.W.
02-18-2008, 09:13 PM
Ok well im glad i turned back then.
Is the top where the tower and a couple buildings are?
The fence i was wondering about is the one you find heading away from town on the trails if your going east i guess.

ManDown
02-18-2008, 09:21 PM
yes the top is where the toweres and buildings are.... and as for the fence... i think its the one im talking about...

C.W.
02-18-2008, 09:26 PM
I didnt cross the fence line cuz i wasn't sure if i should. I was on the top and found the bike track and jumps, kinda the hard way. :D

Do you know anything about the arawana/ mt randolf area?

ManDown
02-18-2008, 09:39 PM
not really been up there a few times to go camping but its one of the places on my list to explore... im thinking about trying to make it over that way from the greyback area probably see if i can get to any of those lakes and cast a line in

C.W.
02-18-2008, 09:46 PM
I have cut across from greyback once in early december. There is tons of trails up there. I definately wanna explore some more up there.
I went up arawana and mt randolf today just on the fsr. They are extending the fsr up there and logging it. I posted a thread about it.
Most of the trails are still pretty deep alot of packed snow from sleds. But its melting fast and getting muddy in spots.

I believe that road has an impassable washout (like 10 ft deep) right near the bottom. there is a way to snake down to the backside that is safe however although you kinda need to be shown as part of it you just drive through the field that has no real trail.

A fun one is you can go down the front to the lower tower (which you can climb up if they never repaired the fence [36] ) but probably would be best to do that when things are dry. from the lower tower you can do a perilous decent that will take you down around the back to the motorcross area also. (definetly hairy!!!!!!)

What do you wanna know about arawana / randolph? all the fsrs on mt randolph are closed with blocks in front of them, but there are still a few ways to sneak on that I have found. usually theres a quad trail around the dug up parts and stuff. Its like a freekin maze between arawana and greyback. I ended up comming down above 3 mile rd once into someones yard I had to get them to open a gate. They guy couldnt believe it and said no trucks been down that road in 20 years. I wouldnt do that one again for anything.

Anyways this sat we should do some explorin :D

sounds like a savage washout... ill neeed some bigger tires for this adventure then

C.W.
02-18-2008, 10:00 PM
All the fsr's that i was on up there today were open. There was one truck load of trees and two workers in their pick ups up there. Some machinery as well. I didnt find any blocked trails just deeper hard packed snow on the smaller trails.
I went up from naramata road and where arawana goes right and mt randolf stays to the left i stayed left. Then it splits again and the newer area heads back right and up. Almost like its going to big meadow or maybe back down to chute lake. I got to the 12km sign and started finding where they were digging trenches just past the machinery. Made the first trench but wasn't sure about attempting the second, it was deeper.
My backroads mapbook doesn't show it going that far. :confused0006:

ok if memory serves when I was last up there 2ish years ago it was blocked off before that.

Check out smethurst rd sometime if you havent. theres alot of cool stuff up there too! keep on naramata road until it turns down towards the town then continue straight towards chute lake and take the first right. then snake up till you cross the kvr. There are some cool trails in there. They blocked alot off cuz they are putting houses there but its worth the drive if you havent beent here yet. maybe we can scope that out this weekend

highwaystar
02-18-2008, 10:07 PM
there used to be a sweet trail from the bottom of smethurst up to ellinor / naramata / chute lakes, but it got blocked off. I really want to find a new way as I loved that drive. anyways gotta go to bed

C.W.
02-18-2008, 10:09 PM

C.W.
02-18-2008, 10:32 PM
I knew the tunnels were blocked, apparently unsafe. I have never seen them though.
And no i couldn't find a way through from smethurst, just the gate and driveway for that house. :dontknow:

C.W.
02-18-2008, 10:44 PM
Cool! which way did you go with a mustang?
I tried from the chute lake lodge but there is too much snow piled up there from the guys with the cabins at the beginning of the kvr by the lodge. The lady at the lodge was saying that the one guys dog doesn't like people much so its not even real safe on foot. He's a pretty big dog, came to check us out right away and we weren't even out of the truck yet.

.

everyway from arawana from smethurst from chute lake... even on this

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc14/Redneck_bowling/DSCN1484.jpg
but then again it does have a picture of a horse so i guess that means its mustang friendly... i didnt even bottom out!!!
the only place i couldnt drive into was the 50 feet before the tunnel.... that rock was just a bit to tall for the old girl

ManDown
02-18-2008, 11:24 PM

I was talking with the chute lake lodge owners and they were saying that the kvr might be closed to traffic even on the railway cuz too many people are complaining lately.

ManDown

ManDown
02-18-2008, 11:43 PM

C.W.
02-18-2008, 11:45 PM

02-19-2008, 05:25 PM
first off smethurst cant be closed, or I will be very very upset!

but yea lets organize a little drive for saturday morning and we will check it out. KVR is fun, I remember driving through that tunnel over 15 years ago riding in the bed of my dads old mazda truck looking for discareded railroad ties to make a retaining wall with, but as more rich foreigners move in it will be closed within 5 years I estimate so their dogs can crap it up...

youngun, few mines in beaverdell area, lumby / cherryville area, and a few old ones ive heard are around the brenda mine but never been there. Come to toyrantulas memorial run this summe well be hittin up some mines in hedley! nothing much close to town tho.

C.W.

C.W.
02-21-2008, 06:53 PM
Well i came to the conclusion yesterday that i gotta kepp it fairly mild, i'd like to check out the tunnels maybe the area between greyback and arawana if its managable.
A&W works if thats where you wanna meet.

If my nissan is broke i could attempt it with my chevy, but i havn't wheeled it yet. I'll check if the back spacing on my wheels on the nissan will fit the chev. They have more aggresive tires.
