View Full Version : Power steering belt flips on side?

I did the timing chain and headgasket and now my power steering belt keeps flopping onto it's side right on startup.
runs the pump just fine, but it's on it's side.
I've been over it a couple times and can't figure out what the problem is...
anyone have any helpful ideas?

Best guess your pulleys arn't aligned

yeah but that's the thing... power steering pump only goes on one way... tensioner only goes on one way and the mainpulley doesn't exactly have anywhere to move...

wrong belt ? belt stretched out ?
you should have play for positioning the pump but it's been awhile for me.

If you are adding powere steering to a Toyota that didn't have it, like I did with my 82', then you need to get the lower pulley. The "new" pulley will have about an 1/2" spacing difference.

Only thing that i JUST thought of as typing is that i might have the belt on the wrong groove in the main pulley. Does it go on the end pulley or second one in?
Belt's new and i trust my part guy. not really any play for positioning the pump much at all, and it's an 87, came stock with power steering...
Beats me... i guess i'll take it to a shop after i get my clutch done... $$$$
ah well... i just replaced the timing chain, front main seal, headgasket, exhaust manifold gasket and did valve timing... hopefully it'll giver for a while now...
