KILLER weekend. I had to go up to Port McNeill on business... so why not have some FUN on the way there and back huh?

First, Horne Lake Caves. I've driven past this so many times and not turned off and checked it out. I will be back.. it's effing awesome. I went about 170metres into one of the 'open to the public' caves, and it has me wanting more. I was the only person in the park that day, kinda spooky way inside the cave.

This is lit up with multiple flashes, I spent some time setting that pic up! You still can't tell the size, just in front of where I'm looking it drops down 20 feet to an underground river, which I climbed down to, then walked up until I reached a vertical shaft with a waterfall at the top! Climb up there and you're in this little 'room' where a rock sitting in the flowing water has carved a huge bowl.

This trip brought to you by: "Ralley That Shit" Rental Cars

Some kind of wild turkey:

(I have more eagle pics... this place near Telegraph Cove puts Brackendale TO SHAME.)

An old workhorse at the Beaver Cove Lumber sort:

So, here we are in Telegraph Cove (nice day huh?):

Went out with the dive club, scuba'd a place called Warbonnet Wall. Nothing short of spectacular diving... The life there is SO thick.

Random broken down junk:

and finally headed home.. here's a shot of the mill in Campbell River:

I miss North Island. There is SO much to do up there, diving, caving, remote beaches, remote towns, fishing, hiking, and the wildlife is everywhere.

I saw a couple bear, tons of eagles(as shown), a transient orca while out on the boat diving, a dolphin, deer galore (and crows feeding on a carcass of a dead one, yum)... I'm stoked about exploring more soon.

Enjoy the pics!

(It's a Nikon D200)

@Lizard: The train is at the entrance to the Beaver Cove Lumber Sort, which is on the way to Telegraph cove. Can't miss it, on the left hand side of the road.

Here's a nice pano of Beaver Cove for the record: (the train would be at the top left end of the road)

@Troy: I think I've got a few more 'old iron' pics from the trip - I love taking pictures of that stuff too!

Thanks for the comments!

Cool! My friends Richard and Ria run the Horne Lake Tours and I used to guide for em on occasion, even spent a x-mas at the house at the camp grounds, which was pretty cool. A few of us got really drunk a couple of times and went into the public cave at 2AM and had a "smokin" jam session....lots o fun! Used to live in Painter-Barkley area just a few blocks from the mill in C.R., misssing the Island....thanks for the pics![cheers]

Hey cool - they still run the tours? I'm definitely going to do one soon! Did you stay right at that house on the lake next to the 'visitor centre' ? That place looks AWESOME.

I also had a 'smokin' time there. Nice to have the cave to yourself during the "off-season".

02-12-2008, 07:36 PM
Man i love the island
I need to check out those caves sometime
