I'm looking at buying a 89 4runner. but the only problem is that the current owner has told me that it doesn't run because the timing chain is broken. now is the 22re a interference engine or not, would the engine be pooched with a broken timing chain?

Thanx for help

22r/re is indeed an interference engine so proceed at your own risk

I was told by the seller that the 22R is an interference engine and that the 22RE is not. Just wondering if I'm getting mis-lead just in hopes of making a sell!

up untill 2000 .. (thats when I left the dealership)

ANY and all Toyota engines , with a timing chain ... IS interferance
ANY and all Toyota engines , with a timing belt ... is NOT interferance .

yup what slacker said.

If ya cant hear it run, you have to assume the motor is done. for all you know its a warn out motor with a broken t chain. You can find good engines cheap. i got a great running complete 22re from alpi's for $200.

By my experience, the 22r, 20r are not interference type engines.. The only time the valves would make contact with the pistons would be IF the valve spring broke or if the keepers broke. I have broken timing chains in 18rc, 20r and 22r's, and have never hit a valve....I guess if you were doing some high rpm and the valve floated at the time you broke the chain and spit out the keeper it would hit. If you had dome pistons and/or the head and the block was decked over 0.040 you might hit also. Hope this helps.[cheers]

I beg to differ.

well lots of different opinions. maybe the toyota dealer will know 100% with the vin number for verification, that is if the engine is original!

broken_down .. ask .. but ask an "old time" MASTER TECH whom has been around a while .. they will know ..

my history is a 20YR Parts manager position (starting 1980 - 2000 ) at the Largest TRUCK seller in BC .. I am NOT wrong .

when my t chain broke, it bent valves. when a buddy of mine hada t chain snap on his 86 22re.... it bent valves.

maybe just a couple of valves ... not the end of the world . Head will still be ok , just some of the valves may need replacing ... The machine shop could tell you .

I had the timing chain in my 82 22R break I bent 4 valves. I had a timing chain in my 86 4Runner break 22RE I bent 3 Valves both of them were under 2500rpm when it broke. I have sold numerous timing kits to guys that have had broken timing chains and they always come back for more parts.

Listen to Slacker he knows what he is talking about.
Is this the one on Castanet that's all lifted? If it is he tried to tell me that they were non interference as well but I know better and he also claimed to be a mechanic but would not tell me what shop he works for. I would be cautious about that one.
