Are those factory turboed 1986 22re's any good?

Anyone ever had one and want to chime in?

The 22RET is basically a low compression 22R. They don't generate too much boost until about 3000rpm. Like a 3/4 race camed engine.
They are rare, I believe they were an option between 1985-1987 in Canada and were produced in Africa and Europe for a few years after that.
From what I have researched over the years, they are good for high rpm wheelin' (rally racing mud boggin') and towing. Parts are sometimes hard and expensive (Turbo and exhaust).
I mucked around with 22RETs a few years back, but I found that I could get more torque and rpm out of a 20R 22R block/head combo for a fraction of the cost.
Hope this helps.:o

If i'm not mistaken, its the Tranny and T-case that were better on those.

they had the upgraded output shaft in them from the factory.. somthinglike that.

The turbo t case is stronger, ( larger input shaft and splines or something) and the 5speed has some different gear ratios.
I believe the tranny is the same as a W5, but I'll have to check that.:o

The tranny is an R151F, as apposed to the W56a an b which an RE would normally come with, and or the G52 and G54 which are supplied on the 22R, if im not mistaken, the R151F has stronger bearings also, as why they are sought after. The early 22R's had the L43, then the L45, L50 and L52 which are all weaker, and or 4 spd. Don't know much about the engines, except that if they required any sort of rebuild, they are very expensive. Have a friend who recently did one himself, and he works at toyota, cost about 4G's for everything.

the turbo tcases have a 23 spline input as well where as the normal ones are 21 spline
