bought a few Trekkers a while back .. and now have started my own .

this one is going to be a "some what" stock restoration .. but with a few "extras" .

so here's where I'm starting .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0350.jpg

don't mind the dust .. it's been sitting inside my shop for a while now .

there is one small rust hole on The right side .. front spring hanger , inside box steel .. you can see it in the pic .. it's so minor , I'm just going to weld in a patch .

so a little work today ... got onto the frame repair .

got the little plates/patches welded in .. It really wasnt that bad at all , the main / worse dammage was from me hitting with a hammer it trying to find the rust .. I really didnt see any point in doing "fish plates" .. as there (in my opinion) was NO structural strength loss . Other side is perfect .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0389.jpg

and done ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0390.jpg

also started "prepping" the frame for the POR-15 treatment.

So when using por 15 you don't need to expose bare metal?? U can clean the framedown to smooth and just brush it on?? I have heard good things about por but I have never used it myself.

This looks like it isgoing to be a very cool project/ build and I will be following the progress.

You have any pics of how it looked before you tore it apart??

You done yet??:D :D :D

slacker
12-10-2007, 06:43 PM
nope .. does NOT have to be bare .. but it has to be clean though and all the "rust" flakes removed ..

the outside is the easy part .. inside is the tough part .

heres what I'm starting with
http://www.members.shaw.ca/slacker502/trekker6.JPG

It was hit on the front Passenger side , so the front/frame is TOAST .. it has a sun/moon roof so I wanted to save the cab .

cut off the front

Por 15 won't bond to bare metal it's designed to stick right to the rust.

Por 15 won't bond to bare metal it's designed to stick right to the rust.

actually it will. "WET" blasted , and prepped with "metal prep" from there site .. Thats how I did this one ..5 years old and still tough as nails .

http://www.toyotafiberglass.com/images/IM000826.JPG

But I think what is trying to be communicated here ... is that you dont HAVE to sand blast , or strip .. or grind the frame .. just clean the rust flakes off ..

I suggest www.por15.com and read !! .

so a wee bit more today
got the top side done (cleaned) , flipped it over and started on the bottom side .

well a little progress to post ..

parts truck is now in pieces . long box frame has been sold , so it's time to "strip er' down " ... got the engine out , and cab hacked to pieces ..

box had been removed previously , and I had cut a hole in the back of the cab for the "long box Trekker" I built ...
Now that that project is all done (for me anyway) It was time to get to work on my project .

I sold the long box frame .. and I need alot of the pieces for my trekker .. so time to strip it .
lots of work yesterday , cut the roof off , and rockers , and cab corners .. I'm going to make some replacements :) so i wanted to keep them . got the engine bay mostly stripped , and engine out .
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0427.jpg

and here is where I started this morning ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0428.jpg

and finally the cab off ..
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0429.jpg

frame stripped ..
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0430.jpg

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0432.jpg

and diffs ready to build .
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0431.jpg

and finally my front clip .

Wouldn't you just need to cut out the back wall to make it into a trekker???

nope .. I'm in Penticton . and I believe that red one is gone now .
I bought 3 .. one I extended to a "long box" , and sold to a customer in Texas .. this i'm building as a "stock" type Trekker , and the 3rd.. will be totally custom ..

I'm building moulds .. and will be re-producing the Trekker back 1/2s .. so anyone with a 79-83 short bed , will now be able to convert there unit into a Trekker .

Long box trekker is done .. back was already cut out , and the floors were toast .. so , I did it this way ... cuz it's easier to handle alone .. and also to stuff into the back of my truck to take to the recyclers .

the duel diaphram booster

I'm curious how your going to mount the dual diaphram booster. Aparently it can't be done in a first gen. I have a dual diaphram booster sitting the garage waiting for me to install it. If you do it, I'll be sure to take notes.

If you take the dual diapram booster and lay it next to the stock first gen booster you'll see the problem. The stock booster has an aluminum spacer between it and the body. Without the spacer it would hit the steering shaft and the clutch master cyl. The stock booster has longer studs and a longer push rod because of the spacer. The dual diapram does not, its suposed to bolt right up to the firewall.

Aparently, if you snag a dual diaphram booster out a certain 2wd truck with a spacer, it works.

I posted this up on pirate, it promtly got hijacked by the guy with the special booster. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=564587

so lookey what I did today :)

stuffed the rear springs and diff back on .. didnt get it por-15'd yet .. but that'll come later ... and yes , those are blocks .. for now .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0509.jpg

I needed my jack stands , so I made some little wood blocks .. for everything to sit on .. I guess I did pretty good on them , kuz , it's perfectly level

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0510.jpg

moved the front diff over , and got it mounted as well ..
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0511.jpg
same thing .. I still need to "detail" but for now , I have other stuff to do .

grabbed my "cherry picker" .. and decided to see just how close the engine is to fitting on the stock mounts ...

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0512.jpg

it sorta fits , but new motor mountd are definatly called for .. the right side actually "sortta fit" ... I was able to get one bolt in , and over 1/2 the hole is showing on the second bolt ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0513.jpg

I'm going to "re-do " both sides .

it's comming :)

ok so a little bit more today .. thank hevens , a weekend is comming , :P but I really want to get the engine secured and up off of the floor .

so .. yanked it off again , and started to work on cutting the stock mounts off .
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0516.jpg

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0518.jpg

and finally both sides cut off .
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0519.jpg

started to "open up" the motor mount side , mounts a bit .. as i'm using the original top side of the frame mounts . They are just a "hair" off , so they need to be enlarged .
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0517.jpg

and finally (for today)
I decided to put on the front clip , and strip it , so I will be able to check for clearances ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0520.jpg

so far .. firewall looks good .. I dont even think I will have any "modifications" .. but , I duno just yet , just acording to my measurements "knock on wood" :)
one thing I did notice though .. I think the engine is going to sit up very high .. like 5" or so .. not shure yet what i think about that ?

..

more tomorrow .

ok .. so its not going to be as "easy" as I first thought >:( ..
original mounts wont work ...

got the front all degreased , and cleaned and stripped
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0521.jpg

got the engine in , and leveled .. and figured this is where I wanted it .
I left some room between the alt , and the frame .. and also I was hoping to use the original motor mounts .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0525.jpg

got the front clip on ......

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0527.jpg

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0528.jpg

NO way .. I cant have it sitting this high .. it's about 1' above the original hood line ..

so , time to start stripping the motor a bit , so I can get it down a bit .. I also think it's inevetable , I am going to have to use a body lift :( ..

According to these guys:http://www.offroadsolutions.com/technicalarticles/34l_conversion_kit.htm#hood_clearance
You need to run a bodylift (~2") or cut a hole in the hood.

Or just take the hood off alltogether, who needs a hood anyways?:dontknow:

How far down can you drop the motor? Since you're not running crossover steering, you can probobly drop it down a fair bit more then someone running the typical highsteer crossover.

03-22-2008, 10:08 AM

How much room between the pan and diff have you got and just how tall are those motors?

slacker
03-22-2008, 07:10 PM
funny you should ask !

did some measuring today ..

engines are 6-8" taller from the original air cleaner (highest point) on the 22r .

stock measurement from oil pan to diff is 6" ..

heres the next move on my behalf .

slacker
03-22-2008, 07:11 PM
ok .. so took a " step back" today , and had a look at "things"

remove a bunch of "extra accessories" I wont be using ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0535.jpg

I went over to a buddies place , and had a look at his /83 .. and did some measuring (I dont have a complete truck)

I found basically the engines are the same length , but the 3.4 is wider , and taller .

so I did some more "mocking up" and I think I have it now .. :)

so with the crossover on the passenger side .. it actually hits the frame .. it also would interfere with the slave cylinder , and clutch fork , so It MUST be modified .
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0529.jpg

using the crossover pipe means , I cant use a rad . ORS wants $370.00 + a core charge on the flanges for a crossover pipe .. Downey wants $395.00 for a set of chrome headers .

I have a feeling I'm going with the Downey headers . ??

ok ... so .. now with the crossover removed and the a/c compresser .. I can now get the engine where it should be , or where I want it .
>>> the stick indicates the firewall <<<

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0531.jpg

>>> the stick indicates the hood line <<<

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0532.jpg

and finally .... fan and rad .. :)

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0533.jpg

I still have a bit of room at the back , so I will move it back a little further .. + I know a guy at a fiberglass shop ( :D ) that can build a custom hood .. and NO BODY LIFT REQUIRED .

I think I will be using the original upper mounts , and build some lowers .. not sure on the isolator yet ..

also at this height .. there seems to be lots of clearance on the oil pan .. I'm using the stock "push/pull steering" .. but if I were to go to crossover , I would need to change out the oil pan for sure ..

I'm finding it hard to believe you can't get it lower in the frame.
My V8 has a high rise and 6" of air cleaner and i still have under hood room, granted i have a 2" body lift but i needed one inch of that to clear the Turbo 400 bellhousing.

blame it all on the alternator .. unless I move the alt to a different place , thats as low as it goes .

Ive got an 85 runner with a dual diaphragm booster, large bore master cyl, variable proportioning valve, land cruiser rotors, what a difference/ The peddle has mabey 2" of travel and only takes a feather to push, when hauling a trailer, the truck stops immediately.

To get the booster in the truck, I had to modify the steering column, I replaced the stock upper intermediate shaft and used high clearance u-joints, instead of the large primitive ones the old trucks come with. This allowed me to fit the booster in.

ok ... so heres the problem i'm having :-/
everytime I work on this project .. I get so far .. and I have to take it down

I have the engine "dangling" from my cherry picker ... and this is not good !

every time I go to do some work on it , I have to change the shop around to accomadate the cherry picker .. and there go my measurements ..
brain fart put it on an engine stand ... hello ???

SO .. I got another engine stand , and .......

were almost ready to go .

got an engine stand .. setting it up .. and almost ready for some engine mounts .

so started working on the motor mounts .

after weeks of shopping , and 1/2 as$ looking around , I finally found the mounts I want ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0551.jpg

They are just perfect ... and exactly what i have been looking for .
They fit the original mounts ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0550.jpg

and "hang" exactly where I want .

I started on the frame side mounts , but had an issue with the press . ... so I had to stop here .

What I have , are the 20r,22r& re engine mounts ...................
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0548.jpg

I cut them to fit the angle of the frame , and the angle of the mounts ... ( paper cut-outs & tape)

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0549.jpg

I'm making a frame bridal/bridge now and got them all cut out .. and ---- no press ...

so had to stop there . untill I can fix it ....

got to work on the drive shafts today ..

started with the front ... hung the original 95 shaft , and no way . CV would not bend enough . So I decided to compare .

angles are WAY different for some reason ? and not sure whay Toyota would change this .
The 95 -> has a lip on the inner CV ball that restricts any "extreme" angle .. so /95 shaft it is not going to work .

you can clearly see the differance . (not sure on the 84-88 shaft , dont have one)

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0559.jpg

so now to line things up .
front flange works (of course , diff side) but the rear (transfer side) has the 10MM studs .. with just a few measurements , I found you could knock out the flange studs . and using the 79-83 8MM drive shaft bolts , it'll line up . I was worried about the differance in the 10mm original , and the 8mm 79-83 .. but if you look at the flange/flange , there should be no movement .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0561.jpg

so .. now FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ON . :) , I may have to lengthen , not sure yet .. but it's on :)

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0562.jpg

rear was not so difficult .. just had to drill the flange . set it up , and drilled .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0557.jpg

finished

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0560.jpg

started with cutting off the original mounts

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0565.jpg

also got some frame plates cut , and "placed " .

also got the "mounts" completed ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0567.jpg

so crap ..
a little maybe ? overzellous .

I was looking at the crossmember today .. and was thinking exhaust .. so I "dug" out the pipes with the O2's .. and placed them where I thought they should be ..

well crap .. there goes my transfer crossmember ... time to re-think .

04-16-2008, 06:41 PM
ok so .. here's why the hold on the crossmember .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0574.jpg

I layed the "header" pipe where I thought it should be , had to wach out for the shackle clearance and such , and sure enough , it would have hit the crossmember .. so I think I have the crossmember figured now , but I figured I might as well get the crossover done , and in place first .

so I chopped up the old one ..
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0572.jpg

some guys have "re-worked" the old pipes , and expansion joint , I decided to go all new .

cleaned up all the old flanges , and put them in place ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0573.jpg

made a "template" of the first pipe , and ran of to get it bent . :)

trimmed it up , and cut it to fit ..

and pipe # 3

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0580.jpg

a little triming (a LOT of grinding)
and a tack here and there , and finally I can weld .

I talked to the muffler shop , and the pipe bender guy suggested staying with the original Toyota flex joint , as they are WAYYY better then the aftermarket ones .. so I cut it out , and re used it .

starting to weld ....

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0581.jpg

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0582.jpg

and fully welded ..
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0583.jpg

part of the reason for this excersize , was I really wanted to have the original heat shield back on .. and TA, DA ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0584.jpg

and stuffed them into the calipers ..

also , flipped the emerg. leaver over .. to make a straighter line for the cable .. now there wont be any interferance with the u-bolts .

so trying to figure out the emergency cable and brake lines ..

first working on the emerg. cable . My final outcome .. is to have the stock cable hook up to a short extension .. heres the direction i'm going ...

I first found some 3/16 cable .. and fittings and such

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0681.jpg

with an idea in mind , I found a bolt to cut for cable retainers .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0682.jpg

I drilled out the center of the bolt , and then cut it in to pieces ...

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0683.jpg

then " V " grooved to top , an slid the cable up threw the center .. and welded

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0684.jpg

and "loosly" hooked up !

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0685.jpg

I checked with the GM dealer today also on the price of the return springs $50 bone each , and the secondary spring leavers .. only avaliable with the calipers .. yeah right :P so I decided to make my own ..

made a template for the bracket , and started cutting and drilling ....

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0686.jpg

and finally an install pic ..

loose

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0687.jpg

and clamped

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0688.jpg

so far so good ..

:)

well never even thought about it untill this morning...

no way a wheel is going to fit over the spring bracket .. man .. what a waist of 2 bucks .. :'( .. a re-think is in order .

slacker
05-23-2008, 07:01 PM
a little worried the wheels wouldn't fit (REM sleep causes this)

so this morning I fit on my "shop tires" 8" wheels and 31's .. and clearances look good . ;D

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0689.jpg

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0690.jpg

also .. got some of the rear brake lines hung .. but am having a problem finding the "banjo" style fittings for my calipers .. help is appreceated !!!

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0691.jpg

.

slacker
05-24-2008, 04:14 PM
so I found the right lines !!!!

First I opened everything up .. and had a look .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0696.jpg

I realized my previous "hanging " of the rear line was no good , so I started with moving the rear upper hanger .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0697.jpg

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0698.jpg

welded , and re-bent the line .. I also added some posts for the line to bolt to ...

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0699.jpg

so with the line now loosly fit ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0701.jpg

I wanted to make the brackets fit my supports .. so I removed the crimping from the new lines , and started cutting and forming and fitting

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0702.jpg

and now a perfect fit .. and re-crimped back onto the lines ...

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0703.jpg

here in BC .. brake lines also must be supported with a bracket , and "C" clip ..

so I made some brackets ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0704.jpg

welded and "C" clipped

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0705.jpg

and used the "domestic ends , and a small piece of line with the original ends on it .. double flared the ends , and done .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0706.jpg

small project today .. that now I can check off the list .. DONE!

Track bar was a little to short because of the lift , so I had to correct ..

Cut the main rod out , and also cut a new main bar .. notice the diameter differance .

ok .. so I know you guys arnt "keen" on the blocks ..

I ran them in my "white knight" for 12 years .. 36" swampers , ARB's front and rear , and 5:29's .. wayyyyy back in the early years .. so for this build , I'm usin em' .

anyway .. blocks work for space for the new rear calipers , and emergancy cables .

so to make the blocks work .. as on my old rig .. I built some "kicker shocks" there not as harch as a traction bar .. and still allow some movement .. but very limited , and "absorbed"

I first I cut out some brackets
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0712.jpg

welded them to the frame , with the MOCK-UP shocks in place

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0713.jpg

then I took the original u-bolt holder , and made some more brackets .. welded , and added some bump stops ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0714.jpg

and now I have a correction for the blocks , and " 0 " loss of clearance .

started a bit of work on the rear emergency cable .

started with cleaning up some of the brackets , and making new ones ..
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0719.jpg

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0716.jpg

the main "swivel" mount was tapped . leveled and welded .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0717.jpg

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0718.jpg

I picked up some 90* 's off the front cable , (on the firewall) 79-89toys from White Valley Collision

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0720.jpg

got them all cleaned up ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0721.jpg

I went to incert the cable .. for a test fit .. and found they wouldnt work .. the inner wheel was plastic , as well as not the right fit for the cable ... I didnt think the plastic was strong enough either ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0722.jpg

so I lagthed some new wheels ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0723.jpg

and now cable fits perfect ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0724.jpg

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0725.jpg

made the new mount brackets ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0730.jpg

braced and tacked into place ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0731.jpg

They seem to be good , although I do have about 1-2 mm of deflection .. I either need to brace them better , make some more supports .. or re-do the brackets in a thicker material ..

so i'm basically FINISHED the emergency cables ..

I decided to weld in a support bracket .. I used the same 1" pipe I have been using for the other supports .. a little continuety .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0732.jpg

They are now 100% with zero deflection ..
I also added 1 more support for the cable , didnt want it "rubbing" against the shock body ...

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0733.jpg

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0734.jpg

so not much to add today .. but a bit ..

dropped the engine back in place , and started on the transmission .. and clutch .

blasted the fork to check for cracks and such .. , and then zinc'd

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0841.jpg

on this swap , you will need to use the 3.0L throwout bearing ..
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0842.jpg

greased the fork , and inner bearing surface , and installed .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0846.jpg

installed the pilot bearing ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0844.jpg

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0845.jpg

the 3.4L clutch installed ..
with these kits you get a "goofy" plastic alignment tool .. but I like to use my own .. an original input shaft .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0849.jpg

and finally the tranny back in place ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0850.jpg

also mounted the starter ..
on the bottom mount of the 3.0L belhousing .. it is threaded .. so is the starter .. you I had to drill the threads on the starter so the bolt would go threw

very simple

re & re'd the ATM wire harness , for the MTM harness ..
also installed the front shaft .. had to remove the transfer flange because it has 10mm GRD11 studs , and stock 83 is 8mm .. so same as the rear shaft , I had to drill .

also mounted the front of the exhaust again , to get ready to build the rear ehaust pipes , and muffler ..

also fully mounted the fuel tank , and installed senders , and pump for good ..

I think thats it ..

looks really good!..very clean, I like how you take your time on everything.

on a side note, why did you stick with the stock steering?
putting in as much work as you have done, I am surprised you didn't upgrade the steering to crossover.

slacker
08-09-2008, 08:49 PM
thank you ..

steering is basically NEW now .. and also ,
simply because it's not going to be a "pounder" .. it'll be a tow rig , and daily driver and advertizing for my shop ..

Hi-steer , or even crossover , would have required me to re-drill the dipstick ,replace the oil pan and windage tray , and replace the oil pick up .. to the tune of a grand + !!! just simply to move the oil pan out of the way .. then the cost of the hi-steer .. un-neccessary in this build .

as this system "stock" /with "mods" is basically brand new .. It should be just fine ..

I also need to get some more pieces from Daren (White Valley Collision) , as there missing from the original purchace .

started to tear down the original Truck today .. finally .......

got it up to the bay doors .. My son , and his buddys started to clean out the rear .. lots of crap stored in there ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0941.jpg

and cleaned out ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0943.jpg

I was very anxious to see the condition of the rear seat , so that was second on the list ..

I was at the front , and was looking at the front passenger seat , and noticed a leaver .. so I pulled it , and to my surprise .. COOL the seat flips forward , to allow the rear passengers room to get in

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0950.jpg

you can also see the backs of the front seats are covered .. and also , with the seat folded flat , you can see it makes the floor flat .. this is the "Q" for the seat deleate panel in the 84-89's , how cool is that !!!!

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0955.jpg

I had Brayden jump in , and I had him pull up the seat ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0948.jpg

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0949.jpg

It's absolutly perfect .. no rips , tears .. nothing .. only the seat belt impressions .. other then the rust on the steel , it's an absolutly awesome shape .. :)

and from the back (seat folded up )

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0954.jpg

how cool is that ?

so continuing on ...
the boys got the windows out

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0956.jpg

and that was about it for them ..
I "cut" out the roll bar , as the one side was rusted completly threw

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0957.jpg

and then had to grind the bolts off the trim panel , to start the interior strip .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0958.jpg

once I got those off , I could pull out the sides , and the headliner ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0961.jpg

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM0962.jpg

YES .. rust sucks ..

but we play with the cards were dealt .. so a wee bit of work in the last couple of days .. and I believe I have finally got the drivers outer rocker done .. so now I can do the inner .

cut off the old rotten fender mount ..

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM1147.jpg

cut the new/used one off my parts truck (already done a while back) sandblasted .. and then fit .

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM1148.jpg

and welded

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM1150.jpg

also made a little patch for a weak spot on the rocker

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM1149.jpg

and now I can fit the inner :)

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM1152.jpg

and finally the inner rocker skin

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM1154.jpg

also got all the welds "dressed"

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM1155.jpg

and also got a little new piece today ...

[f] Now I must say it has been a interesting build, but c'mon get on with it. Finish the truck and take some pics, really don't need to see a picture of every bolt and weld you put on it. If you took less time taking pictures and posting them you would be alot closer to the end goal.[f]

Just poking fun, not being an asshole2 . Nice truck looking forward to seeing it finished.

so I was able to work a bit on the trekker last night ..

and started cutting the rail off .. had to do this in sections , and tack it , so that the roof wouldnt "pop" off :)

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM1167.jpg

and with it fully removed

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/bj_bumperboy/MY%20Trekker/HPIM1169.jpg
