View Full Version : Mark's 54 Bogger Test Run

KINGCRUISER

Well we headed up to postil to see mark's big chev on 54s for the first time. He was mostly tuning it in, but everyone got out on the ice and did some nuts. After hanging out by the fire we headed up into some trails, and had a wicked day[36] Can't wait to go up there when the snow is about a foot deeper.

No trails yet, still tuning the boost from the turbo. But I still thought it was cool just to see someone actually buy them, and get them rolling on their truck so soon.[1e]

Mark didn't end up breaking anything, we just gotta fine tune his turbo a bit... he's runin still 16 lbs of boost haha. It was a good test run, by the way, he's got both transfer cases in high range and his tranny in drive, he doesn't need more power to turn those 54's haha... that truck takes off on pavement! trust me haha i work with the guy haha. I gotta take more pics of my nissan next time i go out, just a couple things i gotta do for next time haha! made for a wicked day out though!

Also, what do you mean by 'fine tune' the turbo? Like..fuel mixture, waste gate release pressure...?

What kind of system is that? How does it meter the air? I notice it has an exhaust to atmosphere blow off - must sound like a rice rocket.. What motor is that anyway, I don't think anyone has mentioned..

youngun
12-05-2007, 12:07 AM
yea, but pavment has alot less grip then 3' of thick postil mud. unless hes going to be able to get a minimum of 600hp outta that thing.

12-05-2007, 12:08 AM
he took out the 350?

halfwaythere

Kinslayer
12-05-2007, 12:22 AM
remember he's running 410 gears, and dual t-cases... and around 500 horse

500? That's it? there are so many better ways to get 500 horse out of an LT1 than a turbo..I mean..a supercharger would yield much more consistant results- consistant pressure, no need for wastegates and custom exhaust manifolds. the consistant pressure alone would be the most benefit, especially when wheeling - wheeling with 54 inch boggers I don't think you'll want to snap into that 16 psi power band too often, snap being the opportune word. of course it's a little late to change the plan now heh.

4:10s? I guess they are a STRONG gear but I mean, you run 4:10s when you are rolling 38s so you have some power with a 350, so you're saying in 'high range' he can spin those on dry pavement? What is the total reduction after the dual cases in high-range? I'm not saying his build isn't impressive but I mean there isn't any way he can spin those things on dry pavement without some kind of reduction ESPECIALLY with an auto. Those tires weigh 189lbs a PEICE..BEFORE rims and beadlocks..

i don't think he ever ran a 350 out of a burban... he has a 350 in his burban on propane.. never came out... when you hear that?

steeper
12-05-2007, 02:00 AM
carb should take care of the fuel metering, provided he's got a rising rate FPR, I'd Like to see more pictures of the engine bay. What turbo is he running? better be big, single turbo on a 350 gotta be big! intercooled? I see the boost tube is coming up from below, if not, he might want to look into that. 16psi not intercooled=inefficient HOT air=no good!

no. His regular cab truck on 44 boggers was yellow a long time ago, he then added the crewcab section from another cab, not from a burban, and that's why there's a gap between the doors with some rubber trim covering it up. If it was a burban the roof would be raised. I know he's parted out a burban or two cause some came my way.

It has an intercooler on it, and it goes from deep in the frame to the hood. He has put together one nice rig there.

In the pic you can see the turbo in the lower/mid area. The inlet has a big arrow on it, the outlet (pressure) goes down towards i'm presuming the grill/lower grill area where an intercooler would reside, then up towards the intake.

I have a question and im not trying to beak or anything but do any of you guys have problems with putting that big of a tire on that kind of diff?..reason for asking is cuz on the monster truck they are 66s and we had 5 ton top loaders and i broke king pins twice this summer and i never bagged on it its a ride truck so i dont go hard on the shit and the 5 tons are rated for 22, 000 pounds but we have a set of 20 tons with planetaries now so i dont have to worry and the 54s are pretty big so i was just wondering?..

Also, what do you mean by 'fine tune' the turbo? Like..fuel mixture, waste gate release pressure...?

What kind of system is that? How does it meter the air? I notice it has an exhaust to atmosphere blow off - must sound like a rice rocket.. What motor is that anyway, I don't think anyone has mentioned..

meter air? you sure you are a mechanic? fuel is metered, air is throttled.
it looks to be a blowthru system with a carb (guessing Holley as there is so much info on tuning them for blowthru available)
work like any other carb, airflow draws fuel through metered orifices.
I cant see where the wastegate dumps in those photos, but I do see a tiny blowoff valve on the plenum box.

carb should take care of the fuel metering, provided he's got a rising rate FPR, I'd Like to see more pictures of the engine bay. What turbo is he running? better be big, single turbo on a 350 gotta be big! intercooled? I see the boost tube is coming up from below, if not, he might want to look into that. 16psi not intercooled=inefficient HOT air=no good!
1 turbo good 2 turbo twice as nice ,maybe ditch the gas run propane as well,as it is a vapour and has a higher octane rating ,54s are cool but even with 35 spline thats taxing them axles

anyone can order a 6 8, 10 inch pre fab lift kit and put it in a chevy dodge ford or imports buy bigger tires and shit but i takes a lot of time and money and bullshit to acutally rip a truck apart and make a monster truck iv been building my truck for a few years now and the only thing original is the frame and body when u start going anything bigger then a 44 bogger u start running into problems like steering , break lines, driveshafts, and a number of other problems. when you start going as big as 44,47,49,54s or even tractor tires u have to either make the parts on your own or get them built and to some they look haggard and shit but untill you get to that point u cant say shit because we build these trucks to work not sit and look pretty. theres always ppl that will knock other ppls trucks simply because cuz they couldn't build one themself and its always the ppl with the smallest truck that bought a pre fab lift and put it in and think they have a dope truck anyone can add some leaf springs and some tires i have respect for anyone that trys somthing as crazy as putting rockwells under something and watching them beat the fuck out of there trucks because thats what they built it for so enough of the fucking bullshit about this before u bich anymore actully build a huge truck then come talk

that is a cool lookin truck that has taken alot of money , time and energy.. cant deny the cool factor...i have personally seen this truck in action...

as a spectator i would have rather seen him spend the money on being able too spin the 49's instead of buyin 54's buuuuuuuut.. im just a spectactor...[cheers]

The articles have to be submitted a year before publication, so, it's featuring last year's Toy Run...Very cool tho'! [cheers]

There is a large waste gate right beside the turbo...open your eyes... and dont work on anything to complex....metering air is out there.. in many forms like vnt turbos and can you show me how my air is "throttled on my diesel";) ......but anyways cool truck nice too see everyones bigger projects out of the driveway

Err..the waste gate is INSIDE the turbo. It doesn't waste AIR, it wastes EXHAUST to spin the turbo down. The BLOW OFF VALVE is what you're lookin at. The issue with air metering is probably handled inside that giant silver magic box, most turbos these days use a MAP sensor inside the intake, which is after the BOV, but older school set ups use a MAF sensor which meters uncompressed air before the turbo as it passes through the air filter... In a case like that you can't use a BOV to Atmosphere, but a recirculating BOV, instead of making the good old rice rocket 'PHSSSS' sound, it just equalizes the air between the pressurized and non-pressurized sides of the turbo.
A wastegate:
http://fc3spro.com/TECH/HOWTO/ZWG/latewg.jpg

It's actuated by a lever mounted to the outside of the turbo. A small hose runs from that actuator to the pressurized side of the intake, when the pressure reaches a certain..pressure, the air is able to push a diaphram held in place by a spring which in turn pushes the lever which opens the waste gate. Exhaust flow bypasses the impeller, slowing the turbo down (reducing PSI)

Here's another decent diagram:

Oh, when he says 'air is throttled' I think he is talking about the throttle plate..which does 'throttle air'...never heard it said like that though

so does a 650 holley have 650 throttles?...... do you have to pump a holley 325 2 times too flow that same amount of air.... as one pump in a 650:dontknow:

Uhmm, there's only like one or two throttle plates in carbed or fuel injected systems...they just open and close to let air go by (or air and fuel if it's TBI). By 'Metering' I am referring to MEASURING the amount of air/oxygen going into the intake, not controlling the amount of air. With a turbo set up..or hell any injection system you have to measure the amount of air going in to correctly determine how much fuel to put in.. the computer takes the information from the MAF or MAP and tells the injectors to open and close. With a carbed system (my knowledge is quite a bit less in this area but bear with me..) the air passing over/past the fuel intake or whatever creates a suction, like blowing over the end of a straw..I guess that automatically measures shit right.
