First things first a Dana 44 IS NOT a c clip axle so there is no need to pull the diff cover to remove an axle the 4 bolts at the brake backing plate hold the retainer plate that holds in the axle undo the 4 nuts on the inside of the brake drum, there is a hole in the axle flange for you to use a socket and an extension to remove them, the axle will come out through the backing plate(no need to disassemble the brakes or remove the backing plate)

Now you will need a press and you will have to remove and replace the axle bearing to replace the axle seal, do not expect to save the axle bearing just install a new one and if the bearing is a good tapered roller type ( I always use the Timken bearings and the part # is a Set 10) make sure you get the old bearing race out of the axle housing.
