use the tranny out of the diesel, make new mounts and adjust the intermediate shaft from your zuke to fit and use zuke t-case.

is there a RWD tranny for a 1.6 VW diesel? I thought they were all FWD.

You can get an adapter kit, but if you do, get an adapter kit for a tracker tranny, stronger tranny.

sorry my mistake didn't see the vw,thought he was using diesel out of a 2wd toy pickup.

It may be stronger but then your stuck with a married transfer case (unless you use a 2wd tranny, blah blah blah, pain in the ass). I have never seen an issue with a suzuki tranny, they seem to be fine. If they can handle a 1.6L 8v, its for sure gonna handle a VW diesel.

Hmm..Well I get all my sammy info from my buddy, hehe. If you go with a tracker tranny you can grab the tcase for use as a range box in a doubler set up as well <tap nose>

why would you want to use a divorced case anyway? with the wheelbase of a sammy i'd think you would want as short a drivetrain as possible..

cause a sami tcase costs about half that of a married tcase to reduce. simplicity. I got my 6.5:1 tcase gears for $399.

You should decide on the engine first then the axels....

The vw diesel pulls alot different than a gas motor. All the torque is down low where with the gas engine it's up high (in the rpm band)

The vw diesel is happier at ~3000 rpm (110kmh) on the highway. This will mean you need to go with a lower ratio gear set in your axel (3.73 or 3.55 for 31" tires) where with the gas motor you will need a 4.something or 5.something ratio for the same size tires to make the gas motor run at ~4000 rpm where the gas motor is happiest.

If you build your axels and settle on a 5.something ratio for your diff's they will be too low for the diesel and would have to be changed after.

Decide what motor you want first then build your axels....

:hititx: err..no wait.. [stupid]

Diesels rev way lower, and have way more torque. If this is a trail only rig go for low gearing, but if you plan on driving it on the street/to the trail, you are going to have to consider your top speed.

has anyone done this swap beffore ?

I haven't..but you can calculate your engine speed to wheel speed fairly easily if you know your gear ratios.. you can find you tranny and tcase ratios on the interweb

the 2wd tracker trannies have small cunter shafts and tend to pop. use a 4wd tracker trans if you plan to use a turbo engine, the sammi tranny will not hold up. you can snap em in half and blow the input shaft right out of it.
