So the gas tank in my 87 Yota is leaking at the mid seam....full of water and gas from Stave resulting in no power!! Anyone got a tank or a replacement tank idea? It's a cheap beater so nuthing too fancy or expensive!!

Is it rusty or has the seam just split?
Some welding and a $50,oo can of sealer might just do the trick.

I knew I could count on ya guys!! It is parked up hill!! I can't fill the focker more than half....maybe I will just seal it with some soap. It seems to result in fuel starvation, which sucks going up-hill....in 2nd......

Clean the seem real well.
Go to the parts store and buy a 2 part sealer that withstands gas and that shuold fix it good enough.[5]

If the seam is split I would solder or braze it but you better do it right or kaboom. If it's rust holes time for a new one. [cheers]

I have welded lots of gas tanks, gas and diesel. Im' shortening my BJ60 tank right now. You don't just start welding on the tank you have to pull it out, pull out the pump, and clean it out. When i'm done welding mine i'll seal it up with the same stuff.
Found the old can it's put out by Custom Automotive Products

I have done it myself ,as long as the proper precautions are taken it is doable.

it's safer to weld on a full tank then a partially full one...

that aside...

i have a yota tank if you need one...

I fill them up with water and let them sit for a while, drain, then go to town.
Haven't blown myself up yet.
Tank on the BJ60 didn't even get a rinse.

Oh yeah guy, just drain it so there is only gas VAPOUR in there..then put the cap on real tight and let it sit so it expands, thus closing the hole. THEN weld it.

Ha ha, when I was young and foolish (about 25 years ago) I welded up my gas tank. Filled it with water first like I was told to do and then proceeded to start welding . BOOM and OUCH, there were still fumes in the tank and I was sitting on it, the flames came through the little rust holes like jets and burned my ass and just about had nuts roasting on an open fire. I rerinsed it a few more times and welder it up with no problems. JUST BE CAREFUL !!

two dollar tube of seal all from lordco works magic
I did the bottom of my bronco tank with it after trying everything else that was supposed to work.
Use a brass brush (not steel) and clean it real good to get all the loose stuff off and go to town.
I had over 30 holes in my tank from rust perforation and did this 5 months ago and not a drop has leaked since then this shit will alway be in my tool box now

Fill the tank with water bake it at around 150 and purge it with argon and weld it. Youll get some pops but no explosions. POR15 makes a nice tank sealing kit. Isnt there any lining comapys in town. You can get a liner poured it it for pretty cheap

Sounds like it might be easier to get another tank!! It sat for a couple of years and has lots of crap in it, however, now Shelley's gas tank in her Pathfinder is leaking(!) so I will get the magical goo when I get back down there(light leak.....). Thanks guys!!
