Troy
09-25-2007, 11:19 PM
I bought this truck in November 2006
Approximatly 3 weeks later I jacked the truck up and ripped out everything below the frame rails and stripped the body down.

Truck when I got it
1979 F250 4x4 Camper Special
400 c.i. M block motor
NP435 4 speed tranny with granny low
Married NP205 transfer case
RS Dana 44 front axle
Dana 60 rear axle
3" body lift
35" all terrains

I decoded the VIN and found out:
Truck was built in St. Pauls Assembly plant in Minnesota in August 1979

i figured i was doing it right the first time

only reason i put blocks in the rear was to level it out with the amount of lift in the front.

hey at least i welded them to the axle when other people stack blocks

looks killer dude the only thing that concerns me is your shock hoops if you bottom out your shocks its only time till they twist right outta the frame.
I woulda spent 20 bucks (already did in mine) and bout extended shock hoops for the front and welded them in.
Doing this will also give you way more upward suspension travel

only you would be stupid enough to buy anything from pats driveline

i only bought that one yoke from complete offroad. I ordered another 5 1410 UBOLT yokes from Northwest fab along with some other bling.

trust me im not happy about the shocks. I bought the wrong ones they are way too fuckin short. Next year Im going to replace the fronts with BBC Gas charged shocks and a 1 link rear with airbags. Im just going to wheel it with these shocks and get some use out of them.

more pics to come

mine are 1410 size, they are a helluva lot bigger than stock. They run about 90 bucks from http://www.northwestfab.com/yokes.html they are on the island. If you upgrade yokes you will need to get new driveshafts and u joints made up.

sure ill race you.......offroad. we'll see who goes farther in the bush/stave.

so she's almost there eh. Keeping the motor about stock?

motor is a 400M it has edelbrock 650 carb, Edelbrock 400 performer intake, headers. It runs very good, even with the open headers so im leavin it that way until i blow the pushrods through the valve covers. Then I want to build a bitchin 400 with nitrous.

this truck is sick man, great work, What color are you painting the cab/box?

definatly dark blue. maybe even a metallic dark blue but thats a ways away yet.

ill do another update in a couple days...

Hey, some food for thought on the next build.... don't know if this is the right plce for this but I was reading about your 400 you were gonna spray. I was gonna build a 460 to put a bottle on, pricing things out pretty much any set of forged pistons will run you around $1000, (unless you own a sm block chebby - then everything is practically free!) add in a bit of machine work to the rods and crank and it hits somewhere around $1500. If you're willing to go one step further I paid $2000 for a rotating kit - scat 4.3 crank, eagle 6.7" h beam rods, and probe forged pistons. That is a mild ford build with 0.030" over bore. If you want a little more for the same price get a 4.5 in crank with up to an 0.080" overbore will get you all the way to 557 with no block mods except the bore. Of course with all the bore variations in between. My 521 build is very streetable, mild .590 lift cam, stealth intake and predator carb (900cfm). I just ported out a set of DOVE heads and put in bigger valves. I haven't dyno'ed it but in comparison to other trucks I'm around or past 500 horse and I haven't put a bottle on it yet. A 460 block will bolt in nicely into your truck.

Can't wait to see your truck finished. cheers.

Troy
12-10-2007, 04:44 PM
ive been thinking about a 557 big block with scat crank and all the good stuff. I'm not positive on what motor I want to build when this one blows. I need to get the truck driveable first!

thanks for the comments

80 over is no much on a stock 460 block you will have lots of hot spots and depending on what year of block you might even break through the cylinder bore but if you like wasting coin go for it just speaking from experance

I know .080 over is quite a bit, but it is achievable. This may help.

I never said it wasent possible just the couple that I have built ran hot and one block was super thin in the cylinder walls and if you fill the block half way with block cement you will stop alot of the block deflection but you run on the warm side but if you know what your doing you can drill the heads out and run reverse cooling and like the fourm said just make sure you get it sonic tested!! personly I think a 521 is the perfect combo for a ford motor

ok lets bring this thread back for 2008

i custom made my own 1410 series driveshafts for the truck. I used ALL junkyard parts and it cost me just about $200. New U-joints were another $100. So i built my own 1410 series heavy duty driveshafts with new U-joints for under $500 which is what the going rate is at a driveline shop for ONE custom driveshaft. Goes to show how much money they make. Fuck em I make my own parts.

I also got a bunch of the little stuff done like breather hoses, gear oil, interior work, fluids etc.

I backed the bitch out of the carport today for the first time in over a year and a half, it felt DAMN good, i had butterflies in my stomach i aint gonna lie.

Here's some pics

this is the shorty driveshaft connecting the dual transfercases, all 1410 junkyard parts, made by me. I am damn proud of this:)

nope

i just aligned everything real good and welded them up. I drove it in 4th gear prob doing about 45 miles per hour and no vibes or shaking, nothin, just smooth troy built suspension and drivetrain.

and we dont have any snow down here yet:(

still need to put the front driveshaft in and buy some drive flanges for the hubs so i can use the 4 wheel.

and does anyone have a power steering pump for a Ford 351M / 400 ??? I need one , im pretty sure mine is fried.

Everything else is new in the steering except for the pump.

no my truck came with a married style case, i added the divorced case behind it. To me it was the easiest, most cost effective way of having dual transfer cases. I can't see me blowing those big ass 1410 U joints any time soon. I know the 'better way' or the 'normal way' would have been to go and buy a wicked awesome doubler kit from Northwestfab or something, but I try to think for myself and do things a little different, and maybe a little more redneck but hey, the thing crawls and it works so i see no harm in it.

and thanks heavy, i cant wait to give this thing a good shit baggin. i still have a bunch of stuff to do like exhaust (the open headers make my ears ring and the exhaust fumes comin thru the floor arent the best to be breathing in), also have to do some work to the steering, need to make some shims, its tilted forward too much. I got some steel for bumpers and a stinger. Also going to go with some drive flanges in the front diff.

i have to do some troubleshooting first, so patford i might have to take you up on that offer.

no e-brake right now, but its on the list of future mods

i was thinking about putting a driveline brake on the rear output of the last transfer case. probably will use a motorcycle rotor and caliper, not sure if hydraulic or mechanical.

this is MY build thread

save the shit or start your own thread

the high angle one is nice and all but id rather build my own e-brake setup.

because what do you learn by buying something and bolting it on? not too much other than realizing that you got bent over for something you could fab yourself. thats the way i see it anyhow.

Troy
01-27-2008, 01:58 AM
alright today i got the front wheels off the ground and bled the power steering system. It needed almost 3 more litres of power steering fluid, thats how much air was trapped in the hydro ram. Took it for a test drive again and i can turn the wheel from lock to lock with ONE finger, sitting at stand still. I friggen love it. I still have to adjust the caster on the front diff, the tires are cutting in too much and its chewing my boggers up already just from a couple drives on the street.

78bronco
01-27-2008, 02:08 PM
well GET R DONE and go play in the snow

Troy
01-27-2008, 08:24 PM
what snow?

i was going to do the caster today but i went and did some donuts and hill climbs instead , seemed to work real good but somehow my rear springs compressed to much and jammed my shackle all the way up. I just pried them up with a pry bar but they keep doing it when i hammer on it. so i think i might have to make a limit tab or something , or move my shackle back so its closer to 90*

then i flexed it out in the front yard, i aint bragging but this thing flexes pretty good for a truck with 17 inches of lift. I did a few things to the front leaf springs which i think helped out.

nother update'

here's the problem i had with the old rear shackle hangers, there was too much angle so they would jam up under load causing all kinds of problems.
80178

so i made new ones out of 3/8'' plate and BOLTED them to my frame
80179

got some 35 spline warn hubs
80180
made new frame rail sections out of 1/4'' plate
80193

80185
then i built a new front bumper out of 8'' channel steel and wrapped it around
80181

80182
i also built a new ladder bar out of schedule 40 pipe with a shackle at the frame end
80184
i made a new 2 piece 1410 series driveline for the front
80183
there wasnt enough slip in the shaft and this happened at stave
80186
then at stave i also busted the joint off the hydro ram, i didnt weld it properly.
80188
so i beveled the end of the shaft and welded it with stainless electrodes, now the shaft will fail before the weld does.
80187
and i also bent the bottom flange of the frame rail from hitting a 3 foot rut sideways.
80189

80190

80191
i need longer front shocks. also need to do some fender trimming in the front.
80192

that is all for now[cheers]
