So from Trout lake we headed back south to Duncan lake to ride some new dirt and more high ridge trails. We camped at Howser which I highly recommend, close to the lake, quiet rec sites and quad trails are accessible right from camp. We had to ride some blacktop to get to Meadow mtn and the gas station at Cooper creek, but worth it.

We moved to Howser on Thursday and left for Howser ridge close to noon. It was a nice ride consisting of 32 km one way of logging road and old mining trails along the ridge from 1800' at the start and hitting over 7000' at a few points. At the end of the ridge is a nice lake with lots of small trout jumping the whole time we were there. Again, gotta start packing a fly rod! :confused0006:

This photo was taken above such a steep dropoff that it almost looks as if it was from an airplane!

The gold at the end of the rainbow. In this case, this sweet little lake full of fish at the end of the 32km long ridge! Need a rod next time up here.
62100

62101

Grassy meadow along the way
62102

Some of the old mining trail. People always bitch about mining and logging, but if it weren't for them, we wouldn't have any of these access' to the back country.
62103

Even though it was almost September, you could still hit snow left over from last winter! :D
62104

Another view of Duncan lake, with better light this time
62105

This stump was cool. It was hollow and about 8' deep. Ryan had to use his feet on the insides of it to keep from falling in.
62106

Arrived back at camp to see this youngster eating the neighbours garbage they left out. [16] And with all the warning signs of a bear in the area, you would think they would have cleaned up. The bear showed up the following night and gave Scott some some stress as he was sleeping in a tent! He woke up to it's sniffing/snorting and poking the tent with its nose! :vroam: It finally decided to check out my truck and canopy and gave Scott a chance to walk up to his car and sleep the rest of the night there. Stupid thing is I am paranoid of bears and I slept right through all the yelling! :D
62107

Friday Meadow mountain was out destination. A big sledding spot after the cat skiing operation closes in early April. I forgot how nice it is up here, was '96 last time up on a sled. Gotta make plans to head back next spring.

Here, Speedy takes a run up a short but nasty rocky climb
62108

And here Scott wisely decided to take the bypass up the small gully, but it too proved too much for the little King Quad! Couple of well placed rocks had it hung up and spinning out.
62109

Little pond on the way to a lake
62110

The trail to the lake had just about everything, mud, rock ledges and tight trees. Right up my alley! :D
62111

Another alpine lake where we saw lots of small fish. They would have made great pan fryers.
62112

62113

Heading back out and climbing the rocky part
62114

62115

Found an old mining trail that led up the side of the hill and took us to the base of Meadow mountain. Was a long walk from here to the top but worth it.
62116

Speedy on top of Meadow mtn
62117

I couldn't believe how steep this cat trail was, must have been some prospecting a few years ago. Super steep!
62118

Looking at the quads way below us from the top
62119

And a view of the lake we were at a half hour before
62120

Ryan couldn't resist playing on the snow!

62122

Sweet little cabin the sledders use
62123

62124

Sitting on the ridge
62125

We even found a mine up there, not the safest one I've been in, but still a cool one to check out.
62126

62127

62128

Some sort of hand winch or maybe a roller for a tarp?
62129

The bowl where the mine was
62130

We watched a big ass black bear walk from the bottom of the bowl up the ridge. Wish I had a big zoom for it
62131

Top of the bowl where the mine is
62132

Wouldn't have been a trip to Meadow mtn without visiting Drifters Pub. Had to at least buy a 6 pack! :D
62133

Saturday we planned one last ride before heading home. Drove down to Cooper creek then crossed to the other side of Duncan lake and headed to the top of Lavina mountain.

Along the way we stopped at this old stone quarry. It must have been at least 30' high in there.
62134

62135

The cutter they used to make the blocks of stone
62136

62137

62138

Met up with a few other quadders on top of Lavina
62139

The old fire lookout tower. Was still in nice shape, good enough I would stay a night in there.

Looking north to Duncan lake from inside the tower.
62143

And the same view outside

62145

The Hamill creek fire was still smoldering in a few spots below us
62146

Even found a mine way up here! I am amazed every time where those old guys prospected. Lavina is sitting at about 7300'!

Wicked pix, sometimes I think mining hasn't evolved much, then I look at those pix...maybe it has,but the old ways were a lot less invasive.
