Started working on my BJ60, plan is to get as much tire under this thing as possible with the least amount of lift. Wheel tubs and arches had quite a bit of rust so i cut up to the the top of the body line. Two inches of the door came off as well, front fenders and inners get the chop tomorrow. I am sure once i put in the SOA i will be able to run at least 40's and still be able to stuff them without rubbing.

looking good so far

FZJ80
09-03-2007, 06:50 PM
Pulled off the front fenders to trim them up, nice to see that the rust was confined to the rad support. With 38"s, wheel wells look kind of large.
Found this neat idea in front off the rad, looks like PO used a blind to decrease warm up time, has a cable that runs down under bumper.
Thanks for all the help Paul.

Looks nice man. You gonna be driving it much? If you can get a turbo and intercooler for it, It makes a huge difference on the highway up hills. My first 4x4 was a bj60. It was gutless but went everywere.

FZJ80
09-10-2007, 08:07 PM
Allready have a pair of turbos and 4" exhaust pipe given to me by a friend, not going to run a muffler. He will get me a intercooler when one gomes up.
Another friend is going to tweek the pump a bit for me, i don't expect a whole lot of HP out of it i want the mileage and engine life to be good.
Decided 10" as the amount to shorten her up, so i went past the point of no return and put the zipcut into action.

Pudge
09-10-2007, 08:28 PM
Man that zip cut works like a hot dammmm, I shoulda come down there to do my fenders, lol. Looks good, lemme what night the lid is coming off, and I'll come over and drink some of your beers :)

Rear half of the quarter panel was 24" long, now it's down to 14". Thats short enough for me, i don't want to loose to much cargo area. The lower portion of the quarters are cut up 4" as well and i plan on making my bumper go forward under the quarters then reattach to the frame forming rear sliders.
Rockers are going as well, being replaced with .150" wall 2"x3" tube.

Got off my ass and did some work. Since i cut out both wheel tubs to enlarge the wheel wells the arch of the doors now forms part of the tub.
I have decided to do the tubs in a few pieces to make it easier, both sides will be Rhino Lined anyways.
Lower portion of the 1/4 panel has been trimed by 4" and capped off.
Pulled the diff to start SOA on new frame.

Cut off all the old spring hangers and mounted the new ones.
Spent 3 hrs cutting out the frame reinforcement tubes for the steering box and reinstalling into new frame on the correct side.
I didn't want to cut open the new frame so i cut up the plate and pounded each piece down the frame rails.

Today pulled the motor, trans and Tcase, welded the rear crossmember into the new frame, cut motor mounts out of old frame bolted them back on the motor and set it in place then welded them in as well. Put front suspension under new frame to confirm spring mount locations after shackle reversion.
Now i have to pull it all apart for sand blasting.
Yanked rear third to install 4.88:1s, only doing the rear for now untill i determine if i like them.

Vince , what kind of paint ? are you going to do the inside ?
what was the charge for the frame blast ?

FZJ80
03-25-2008, 08:11 PM
Paint is " Chassis Saver" all in $103.oo a gall. It dries to a semi matt finish ( like factory ) same as POR, Paintable over rust. $200.oo to have it blasted, the sun was out so i took advantage. I am going to spray the inside as much as i can then pour the rest down the frame rails.

Mounted two of the tires and put them on, found i needed a 1/4" spacer to clear the calliper. Wanted to get an idea what this thing may look like and to rekindle my motivation, so on went the rad support and one fender. This thing isn't going to fit in my garage.

Well untill i sell my 383 i can't get my Toybox, so i am working on the rear diff.
I want a full floater but they are a little rare and i'm cheep, so in the interm i am converting my semi float to disc brakes as the discs will keep the axle in in the event of a C-clip or axle failure.
Not much involved other than to turn down the axle flange a little and increasing the size of the center out of the mini truck rotors. 20 min in the lathe, done.
Now i just have to lay out and cut out a caliper bracket from 1/2" plate and Bobs your uncle. Change master cylinder, rebuild mini truck calipers, add adjustable proportioning valve in the brake line, add parking brake to drive shaft. Yep Simple rear disc brake conversion.
Well at least my turbo manifold is coming along nicely.

FZJ80
10-31-2008, 07:31 PM
More done on the turbo manifold, brought it home for a test fit. i will have to turn the preasure housing so the outlet points up instead of at the motor mount. The vise grips are only a temperary deal.

Pulled the head off the 3B last night to check it for cracks in the precups.
True to form all four were cracked, can't put the head back on so i started to do some clean up in the bowl area of the ports.
all i will be doing is smoothing the transitions from the seats into the bowls the rest of the ports are cast smooth and there isn't much in the way flash.
All this won't do Jack to performance but it can't hurt.
Pics aren't the best but you can see the cracks in one of the precups.

Got around to making some brackets to mount my rear calipers.
Finished up with the port clean up on the head, lapped the valves to check the seats, got Paul to bring me the last two wheels to mount up.
But i got pulled off the Cruiser to work on Pauls rash, oops, i mean Jeep.

You putting the inconel precups in? I heard really good things about them you can even open up the precup holesize with them. They take boost allot better then the stock ones too. If you want to make your own I have some inconel 718 at work super expensive but man is it tough. A decent machinist can cut it no problem with carbide too.

I gotta say you have the nicest build I ever seen on this site good to see some one planning things out and not rushing to finish it.

I don't know about this diesel thing though, i gave my friend who owns Jazzy Diesel my injectors to test and two are crap. Another friend in the fuel shop at BD has the pump to go through and to crank up a bit, i can hardly wait for that bill, i still don't have precups, diesel fuel is more than gas and i have a 383 stroker motor just sitting in the garage that could already be in and running on even cheaper propane. I'm starting to think diesels are more trouble than they are worth.

Lots of people raving about cheep, clean veggie fuel but the moisture in it can be hell on your injection pump and anyone that has had to replace theirs knows that can really lighten your wallet.
I have a friend that does nothing but rebuild pumps and injectors all day every day, bad fuel and veggie fuel keep him very buisy.

mostly because toyota diesels are pretty much mainstream everywhere on the globe EXCEPT for North America. Dealer would have had to order their parts most likely directly from japan at their suppliers markup price, then they have to add their own markup as well [1c]

I hear you I just had my 1hd-t pump rebuilt and all 6 injectors upped the wick on the pump and it burns a bit more fuel even with 4" exhaust. Once you do your injectors and pump your good for life if you change your fuel filter every oil change. I add stanadyne to EVERY tank. I dont go below 1/4 tank and I drain my tank every 30k The new ULSD is the shits on your pump. Nothing better to me then diesel way less maitenence.

Got some parts back from being ceramic coated (high temp).
Did some mods on the turbo housing, plugged off and smoothed out the waste gate port with a slug, then machined up a sleeve and pressed it in to stop any turbulence in the exhaust flow past the waste gate exit.
I will be adding a adjustable waste gate in the piping before the intercooler.

I have my doubts that the 3B will spool this turbo up that quickly (although i have been told differently) so i figure the internal waste gate may be moot, and at best a hot gas resriction.
So the way i see it, blowing off boost down stream and keep the turbo spooled up is the way to go.
The whole turbo on this small an engine is a experiment really so we will see.
Worst case, it all goes south and i adapt a small block to the 5 speed.

never played with diesels but I dont think it is possible to overboost them
there is no throttle blades to slow the turbine down so I doubt you need a blowoff valve
most diesels do not use a wastegate and I have never seen any with a blowoff

FZJ80
04-26-2009, 03:46 PM
The use of a wastegate drops exhaust preasure to the turbo dropping boost. This engine didn't come from the factory with a turbo.
Most who turbo the 3B dont seem to run any more that 7-10 lbs max, the odd few have seen boost up to 18 lbs but not for any length of time.
Having said that I'M not opposed to a little experimenting.
I do have a spair camshaft i intend on regrinding a little farther down the road.
