okay I've got a '90 xj, I've just finished lifting it 3" (bds kit) also installed new Outer and inner tie rod, pitman arm tie rod. The problem is that the jeep steering still shoots out of control every once in a while. What else could be wrong? :dontknow:

My jeep did that right after installing a BDS lift and the sway bar mounting bolts were loose, tightened them up and was good....that was an XJ tho...[cheers]...and yours is an XJ too...sorry misread.

does the sway bar really control that much of the front suspension. Never had sway bars in my s-10 and never had a problem. ????

Mine was due to a crack on the unibody frame by the steering box. The crack would open quite a bit when I turned the wheel. Also, my track bar bolt on the vehicle side of it had loosened off a slight bit, made for some nasty clunking noise when I turned the wheel hard. If that track bar bolt isn't FUCKING tight, then that can cause it too.

If it is the "Death Wobble" you are talking about - the frt tires start pretty much bouncing out of control - then the most likely culprit is wheel alignment, when you lift an XJ you HAVE to get a wheel alignment done you will have to much toe in and too much caster.

yeah i just did a poor man's alignment myself, guess it's time to take it the alignment shop....

would the balljoints effect the wobble at all, I know they need to be replaced in the next 6 months or so!

Yes ball joints will affect the wobble #1 the knuckle will be loose so it can shake #2 when the knuckle moves around it will change the alignment. You will have to do the ball joints before you get a wheel alignment.
