so I wasn't paying attention and ran my remote wire into my fairlead and it shorted out and smoked..and now the winch doesn't work..I haven't pulled off the cover to look if its just fried wires... but I figure I should figure out if the solenoids in there are just the same as Ford starter solenoids or if I need something special or constant duty.. probably good to have some spares

My guess would be that its just eh wiring and or the remote control

I've got an 8274 too, the solenoids are NOT the same as Ford (or any) starter solenoids

They need to be high amp CONSTANT duty solenoids. Starter solenoids are only good for about 10 seconds. Last I checked you usually winch for more than 10s..:dontknow:

Agreed.

Where did the smoke come from (winch motor, solenoid box, or remote)? That'll basically tell you what needs to be replaced....

aright so they're not the same...it seemed to come from the solenoid area...and ya I'm takin a wild guess that the wires with be fried

Solenoid wiring, or the solenoids themselves.

Lordco can get you replacement solenoids for pretty cheap. $20 each when I bought em.

I'm thinkin the wiring itself is gunna have all the insulation burnt off...well thats good to know... I thought they'd be a lot more expensive..gunna have a few brews tonight and have a look at it

ended up being the small power wire from the solenoid to the plug.... wires on the remote are fried... have to pull the plug apart somehow i guess ..or buy a new remote

a 4wire round trailer plug fits the solenoid box perfectly, put the other end on your remote and good to go. I did this to mine to replace the solenoid box & worn out connector.
